Is it a good idea to build past the render distance?
Playing single player. Mega bases are my Jam.
But is it a good idea to build past the render distance?
Like would my tames get out of the pens I put them in?
or could a troll pop inside my wall if I go out to much?

From what I can see, the render distance seems to be 60 meters ish
I'm not going to download a Mod for this

No, its not a good idea. The active area of the program is 96 tiles, much farther than render distance. If a work bench you are counting on to suppress spawns is 97 tiles from you because you moved, creatures can spawn there because the work bench isn't active and then they will begin to move toward you especially if you are making noise. If you move so the work bench re-enters the active area after a creature has spawned in it can then turn and destroy the workbench.

mega bases will killl your fps sonner or later. no matter how good your machine is. anything past 20k instances wont be able to sustain 60 fps.

Shouldn't worry about spawns as you can just hide workbenches along the perimeter and in the center of your build to suppress them. The problem though is how much stuff you pack in an area. As Nerevar said lag can get pretty bad with big builds.

Thanks
Ok so Mega Bases are bad
stay under 96 tiles, I'll round it off and stay under 90 tiles
assuming 1 tile = 1 meter. Looks like I have between 60 and 90 meters to build
-60 being my current render distance for stone foundations. So an extra 30 meters out of render, hm I'll have to think about this.

-anything past 20k instances... I don't know what this means

Anything else to worry about?

They probably meant 20k entities or items that the game has to render. I believe there is a function key you can hit to see that, but you would have to look it up. I've never actually used it.

Side note if you aren't using Thor's handy dandy lightening rod incinerator make sure to drop your garbage outside the radius of a workbench. Stuff doesn't disappear within it's radius.

F2 toggles it off and on.

Ok that makes more sence calling it items.

Thors lightning rod? guess I haven't unlocked it yet, unless it's a mod

its called an obliterator and you build it with a thunderstone bought from Haldor (can't remember after which boss).

The thunderstone becomes available after you kill the Elder but you won't be able to build the obliterator until you have iron.

I say build whatever you want and see what happens. If you don’t like game speed or mob spawns just tear it down. I have my main “keep” which has everything I need for my character to thrive then a short sprint distance away I have a pretty large town with gardens, inns, feast halls, storage etc. I dug out around it and have high walls. I have never seen a mob inside it. My tamed animals are caged in there and never cause any issues. Game speed seems fine.

I guess for some context in this fake world it is not King’s Landing but I bet 40 players, if that was possible, could live comfortably haha.

Depends on your computer and your settings I guess. Fires and their smoke can lower FPS when entering the area with a large build. As it is rendering all of the stuff your FPS might take a hit momentarily. I don't know if 20,000 build pieces is a hard wall for FPS. There are a lot of factors with particles also.
With a decent rig, you can build big and still play just fine.

Over 80,000 entities v
