flametal leviathans: an abysmal failure
That's all I have to say. It's probably the dumbest idea for a needed resource imaginable.

They wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so buggy. Often times, they start to sink and my character gets perma-stuck in the falling animation, unable to jump to safety or continue mining. Would also be great if catapults worked consistently on them. Sometimes, you can fire an explosive shot and knock down half the ore from the tower. Other times, it slams into the side of the tower and does "too hard" despite landing on an ore node. It would be way more fun if the catapults worked correctly and knocked the ore down then you could just use the ice bombs or lizard pets to go out and collect the fallen ore.

Na, it's ok. Creative way to get a bit of starting flametal for shield/cape before getting most of it from fortresses.
doesn't really make sense that flametal is just sitting in a box in the fortress, though.

For solo, had plenty of flametal just from fortresses and dvergr outpost.

Unless you build structures with flametal ofc

I wonder why that is even a thing. It's almost as if they know it's not a good way to get the stuff so they put an alternative in...

And before anyone chimes in with a funny retort, no, it makes perfect sense in the swamp and plains to be found in chests because it's tied to the location where you would gather the ore anyway (inside crypts or inside outposts) but I haven't seen a leviathan inside a fortress yet...

I would explain it like this:

The charred in their fortres will have to make weapons, ammunition and their gate must be made of something. Also the spikes. So they must have gathered flamemetal in the past.
What we can take from their chests might be leftovers or backup resources for repairs and such.

according to the wiki they dont respawn?
why would they tie a crafting material in to a non-renewable system like that

It's the same for almost all metals that are being mined.
The only metals that are renewable are tin (the deposits respawn after a time) and blackmetal (not mined but looted from fulings)

I am confused because when my friend and i mine flametal, the node sinks and then resurfaces after a certain period of time. We do not have any mods or anything.

Metal that can not respawn or renewable is copper , silver and now flametal .....
The rest ? Tin may spawn back , iron is rare drop from ooze blob , black metal everywhere in plain .

I've seen people say that they've seen tin respawn in their worlds before (in solo and without mods), but I've never witnessed it, myself. So if it is a real thing some people experience that isn't just deposits they overlooked previously, it's probably a bug and not supposed to happen, and most people seem to never encounter it.

I agree that fortunately you can get enough flametal from fortresses and Dvergr bases.
I think I already have all the upgraded equipment I need so I'm no longer interested in mining much more flametal.
As for the slippery bug, I hope devs either find a way to fix it or at least replace the sinking spires with big explosions.

The respawning tin must have been patched in some time in the past. Some friends of mine remember times when tin did not respawn at all. Meanwhile it does, but it takes a rather long time to do so.
