Smoke needs a diet
I like the idea of the smoke physics and having to design ventilation in our buildings, but after struggling with a small fireplace design for the past hour, it feels like smoke is just way too thick and can't clear out of chimney designs that should theoretically work:

Only way I can get this design to work is if I take out another row of stone, leaving an unsightly three-block high hole in the side of my keep's tower:

Ideally I'd like to just have a one-block high hole, but that'd require triangular stone pieces or smoke to know how to make 90 degree turns.

Also maddening that smoke can't pass through cage walls and floors.

I agree that the idea of smoke physics is a good one, but as you say it is a bit too stubborn when it comes to designing fire places.

Chimneys usually work if they are 2x2 wide and straight. Even if you use a hearth, a 2x2 chimney will be able to funnel out the smoke.

The 45 degree pieces in your flue(s) are what is blocking the smoke and causing it to back up. The gap between it and the stone is too small.

Smoke will pass through thatch and dissipate but it takes an extra 4 meters of height to do that. This historically accurate lodge design uses that trick. There is a fire at each end of the lodge. The ground floor is smoke free but the attic is unusable.

If you zoom into the 45 degree thatch at the back of this screen shot you can see the smoke dissipating through it.

I agree its annoying.
that said..
- a high ceiling with an open bit at the top (like the 45 degree roof caps are open on the ends) is sufficient.
- that means a simple 2x2 wall 'square' chimney with the above roof caps will work fine.

those are 2 simple designs. If you pretend smoke is a 2x2 sized bubble as you design, it will work out better. you can't easily make a tight 1x1 that works, even for things like the evil hot tub.

you can shunt smoke with roof tiles and other objects, so the hot tub and hearth can all go into one 2x2 chimney with a level of shunts to guide it all to the tube.

my approach for a while now has been to put the fire on the top level of my home and just let it rise up and out through the natural gaps the roofing tools create. I found that chimneys were really cramping my homes and far more trouble than they were worth. I have also stopped using any kind of smoke that isn't my cooking fire, like wall torches.

going way, way back here... a campfire with a chimney in a modest early game home:

and a mistlands-era home. the roof is folded (using both types of corner pieces) to throw the smoke out while keeping it safe from rain.

and one more oldie...
just let the smoke do what it does and the high ceiling disperses it eventually. There is a cloud of smoke up there, sure, but it doesn't get dangerous to breathe until more than 4 M off the floor, and I don't care:

just build a long house, no need for a chimney cause top of the roof is open to the sides

Dealing with smoke is a lot easier when you understand how it works...

Try grausten. It's got the stone look, but it's as thin as wood walls. I find when I use the stone/marble blocks, I have to account for their bulk so that the inner dimensions of the fireplace are similar to what they would be if I were using wood.

Thanks for the suggestions, in the end I just knocked out the back wall and put in a 2x2 chimney, so now all four fireplaces work.
