Are freshly cut logs de-spawning?
Yeah?

What I have noticed is that seperate items tend to auto-stack when you leave render/processing distance and come back to that spot later which I think is a newer way to help optimize world performance. Sometimes this behavior can make you think things disappeared, but the game is doing a bit of cleanup for you instead.

Sometimes they vanish if you cut too much, I've noticed. Especially obvious if you play on a modified world with increased resource rate - needed some core wood for a big megaproject I was working on, so I made a new world with 3x resources and if I cut like what, three pine trees and then hacked the logs apart in one go instead of handling them tree by tree, you could visually witness core wood logs and regular wood itself pop out of existence as you broke further logs.

This probably only happened because of the 3x resources though, but they definitely didn't consolidate logs into each other, they just straight up vanished. Not sure what the threshold is to trigger item culling like this, but I guess don't cut up more than 18, 12 or 6 (depending on your resource setting etc) tree logs at once without picking up the wood first. Bring a cart!

The game will consolidate items of the same type if there are too many to handle. They will not disappear, instead they will turn to stacks of the same item.

But I'm not sure if the post is about items at all. If the OP is talking about the 2 wood logs left by woodcutting a tree then they will never disappear. You can actually use them to make bridges etc.

Well, these ones vanished into thin air. It was like the core wood pieces (big chunky, obvious dark brown round logs) just ceased to exist, leaving behind only the regular scrap wood.

Unless the game can put other items inside other items, visually? Like those pieces of scrap wood were stuffed full of core wood or something?

I watched it happen a bunch of times out of interest because I was up until that point under the impression no items ever got culled, so I cut down trees lined them up and smashed all of the logs rapidly with overheads with my axe, and yeah. 3x resources exploding everywhere and vanishing before settling on the ground.

If the core wood logs were pulled inside of the scrap wood then yeah, that's pretty cool as a performance thing, if the game doesn't do that though then it definitely deleted the core wood.

It's really not a problem either way, 3x resource rate and going mad cutting down a pine tree forest with an overpowered axe rapidly is likely not the intended way to play the game, lol.

Yeah actually you're probably right. I've also never seen stumps despawn, but I also obsessively remove them after felling trees just to be 100% efficient with my destruction of nature.

I hope they don't despawn because I like using oak tree stumps as places to put bee hives and things, they're nice decoration. If they slowly deteriorate and break, or just despawn over time, that'd suck :steamsad:

Things seem pretty persistent though so I have to assume they won't.

loot on the ground outside of a player base area effect will despawn after a bunch of ingame days to safe performance.

tree LOGS however will persist permanently until broken down by something as they still count as world objects and not as loot.

yeah i noticed early on they auto stack and they do despawn im 80% sure, i found this out by having a troll follow me around smashing trees for me for a good long while there def wasnt the amount of wood i had knocked down and or smashed on the ground items in your base or near your base never seem to which is awesome
