I'm a fan of the spear weapons, so an upgraded Ancient Bark Spear or Fang Spear will deal with them in 2 strikes.
I tried that method and ended up killing the 6 wolves by trading blows (since they are so fast, you can't just kill them as they come, they are all right on top of you way too quickly).
The result was my victory as you might expect but half my health vanished (nearly 100 points of damage after mitigation in that encounter) and 6 new wolves were right on me a few seconds later (the first one arrived right after finishing the last of the previous group too).
In general with all events ... if you kill them, more spawn. Which is great if you want to farm the resources. If not, you lead them on a merry chase in circles around your base (do not leave the red circle on the minimap) until the event ends. Then mop of the remaining mobs.
For wolves specifically... The Bonemass power will give you the ability to take a few hits. While you can parry them or whack them with a mace and stun them ... my favorite is the atgeir. Its secondary attack is a spinning 360 that knocks everyone back and does a good deal of damage. Spin -> knockback -> keep moving as they regroup and close in -> repeat as needed. Each subsequent spin you'll probably kill a few.
Note: Also works great on Fulings when you try to kite one out of a camp and get five, a berserker, and a shaman!
On Wisconsin!
Don't sprint unless you REALLY have to. Enemies can't move while they're attacking. Anticipate the moment of their attack and dodge it.
Use terrain to your advantage. Look for every opportunity to refill stamina. One example is - you jump over an obstacle, the enemies go around it. It buys you time. Again, don't waste stamina sprinting during that time.
A 2-handed hammer might be slow and do low damage per hit, but if you group enemies up, you can do several hits at once, making you do more damage to the group than you would be able to do with a single-target weapon. It also knocks enemies back. and you don't even have to be in their attack range to hit them. It also hits through walls.
If you know where and when a fight is going to happen, you can dig a narrow pit and "store" enemies in there by knocking them back either with damage or by parrying. If you trap 3 wolves, you have to fight only 3 instead of 6. More won't spawn unless you kill them.
Eikthyr power helps you save stamina. Having stamina might prevent more damage than Bonemass power would. This depends on your preference though.
That "more won't spawn unless you kill them" logic is valid even without trapping them. If you're good at avoiding damage, just wait untill the event stops. Then kill the first group and you're done. Eikthryr helps with that, too. Also, stamina potions.
If you position yourself and your enemies properly, it can be better to roll INTO a group of enemies. When you roll, you're invulnerable for a split-second. You can use that time to trigger attacks of multiple enemies, freezing them in their attack animations.
Edit: While I was writing this, 8 other comments popped up before mine. Yes, all valid tactics, just different gameplay styles. I like playing as if I'm not rested or fed and it's raining.
Otherwise hope there's a steep rock you can get on but they can't and bow them down.
With enough skill you can handle them other ways, but these are the two easy options.
Always stay rested and if you havent already use frost potions or the cloaks.
Ooze bombs are actually quite useful for doing damage when you have to kite, especially in vanilla.
Remember to try and fortify your base. I dont do this anymore myself because i want enemies to attack and damage my fort but digging trenches around your base at least 2 vikings shoulder wide and maybe 4 deep will really help your security.
Try making your walls like this ___l""l___l""l___l""l___, so you can stand on one battlement and shoot between them. try using stakes too
You will need to train yourself to do it fast. Wolves should be hopeless, and you can wait there the end of the event, then do the cleanup with your bow.
Wont save him from a 40 wolves raid.
Best method i know is to raise a stone pillar and kill em safely with aoe weapons.
I always carry at least 10 woods and 10-15 stones in mountain and plains, just for this event
The best way to handle it if you are not overgeared is to use terrain... in the mountains, climb a peak or get on a sheer face where they can't come at you, then shoot them one by one, or with limited access, kill them 1 by 1 in melee. If you get surrounded by more than 2, you will start having problems from being hit so much and so fast you are stunlocked. Even throwing down a workbench and raising terrain (if you have rocks on you, so it may be good to carry a half stack) one spike straight up will do the trick.
* Use good food when at said areas (swamp+ tier food)
* Have medium healing meads/potions (you can get with swamp mats)
* a CC weapon may help too (atgeirs, sledge, frostner)
* try to lure the pack into other enemies, causing infighting
* find a high place, such as a rock and stay there
* if raided at base, there is no need for trenches, 2 layers of stone 'n double door is enough
