Higher tier upgrades for crafting stations are gated behind the next biome. So definitely will have to wait for Deep North.
this isnt true for most of the biomes upgrades aside mistlands onwards actually.
in mistlands everything could only go to level 2 on release. this was a first for any biome.
they then added 1 upgrade for the table and the black forge with hildir in between (7 months after mistlands release to get an idea of when this will repeat for ashlands stuff). neither of these needed any new resources. this allowed level 3 for everything.
in ashlands they took what people told em that the level 2 upgrade made the carapace armor effectively worthless to make over padded as the difference just wasnt there at only level 2 defense wise and allowed everything level 3 from the start
BUT decided to limt gemmed weapons to only get to level 2 again. leading to very poor weapon durabiltiy ratings like on mistlands release all over again.
its most likely that theyll release black forge 6 and table 5 in another hildir esque update between now and deep north. this will allow everything aside gem weapons to get to max level. level 4 gem weapons are deep north and will therefore be mostly worthless to exist as youll be able to get maxed deep north weapons at the same time as deep north will not limit upgrades again since its the final biome there is no reason to do this and adding more than 6 upgrade stations to the black forge isnt likely either the regular forge also maxed at level 7.
this is the most likely case of whats gonna happen. i would be super suprised if they release the upgrades any sooner than that.
in the case of the gem weapons this is actually good as there simply isnt enough gems per gameworld currently due to the fortress only thing and rng and only about 20 fortresses per gameworld.
an asksvin trophy and celestial feathers from a valk.
Bronze armor could only go up to 3 before you get iron or chains, both which are from swamp. Leather armor could only go up to 3 before you got bronze from the black forest, Troll and Root sets could only go up to 3 before you get obsidian from the mountains. For the smithy the swamp was the last hurdle to reach max and for the workbench the mountains, but you could definitely not upgrade your stuff to max before you hit those biomes. Biome 3.4.5 could max their metal and Biome 4 could max its light armor, but the others could not.
Upgrading gem weapons is also the most boring upgrade so far. I pretty much only did it for durability (for the few with low base), since 6 physical damage on that 700 damage weapon that was mostly interesting because of the lightning damage/root effect it adds (which also ignores your weapon skill) and no change in the special for which you've built it in the first place.. is not very alluring. I also totally thought Reto would guard some expensive gem crafting stuff that made killing e.g. Morgens and Valkyries more than twice useful, instead of Asksvin being the only creature that you want to kill a lot but.. no. Just an item for a certain build with hopefully placeholder stats.
Especially past swords and bows got 2 damage types upgraded when you got a level, but even those only get their physical damage upped now, for a "heavy" gem cost and.. ofc also super generic cost since the gem weapons ditch all weapon unique cost on upgrade and all just cost flametal and gems... probably just another case of placeholder though that they will get back to hopefully. I can't see myself going for more weapon updates even if it was possible, except of course if I can't use the mats in another way. Damage in Ashlands is also a bit too low to care about flametal armour upgrades imo, especially with the addition of the high armor cape (that is also the most offensive cape). Frankly the Asksvin set feels already like heavy armour, though of course that is also currently capped at 3.
Maybe Deep North will let you update stuff before you get the materials to craft the new stuff, but upgrading gear has lost a bit of meaning over the tiers due to the lower and lower impact. Not sure why they even added a new Eitr set that is basically the same as the old one, but at least that one got a small increase in its special.
Can't help myself.
They had a set for Ask, they needed something for Embla. But agreed that the ladies should at least get their armor with the same buffs as the guys.
wrong comparison. bronze is the only time this also happend. the rest is NOT made at a forge to begin with so that comparison is simply wrong to make. bronze is the only other heavy armor where it was ever upgrade capped within the biome its made. you must compare the BLACK FORGE with the regular FORGE. and not with the workbench which capped out at 4 upgrades already. and no gear made at the forge ever had such restrictions aside bronze. mistlands and ashlands are therefore exceptions and not the rule.
gems where and are a core issue of ashlands. sadly they fokused on nerfing the enemy amounts instead of addressing this.
all of the ashlands weapons feel like they have placeholder stats. they are all the same essentially. very boring and underwhelming system. mistlands gear was way more interresting.
and ask set got overbuffed during final ptb patch round. it needed a buff. but they went total overboard on it. now they need to either nerf it again or provide a boon to the mage and heavy sets. mage set could raise elemental dmg by like 2% per piece and heavy set should grant atleast fire resistence its made from metal found in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lava.
I frankly thought after the teaser videos that they might give the artifice table the role of the new workbench, but I also kinda like that the old workbenches were not made useless.. well the forge kinda is, unless you mine Flametal, which you don't need to. It seems to be a bit random. Maybe Deep North extension will clear things up or they make a big refining patch after they are done with the main content.
Who knows how they hand the next one.
