Portals and metal
Is there a way (using vanilla, not using mods) that you can move metal bars or ore through portals?

It's extremely time consuming and hard to transport stuff by raft, boat or running (if that's even possible due to geography).

Other than adding to the grind, what does this restriction actually bring to the game, other than being annoying?

The only alternative I have is to setup a whole weapon manufacturing and smelting base at an alternative site, and that's a crazy amount of work to do also.

I'm guessing there is no way, and I expect this topic has been discussed to death many times before.

I read somewhere that this design decision isn't set in stone and the developers are open to change?

I don't want to use cheats or mods if I can help it.

I like the logistics of needing to transport metals. Stone portal kind of defeats that. :steamsad:

world options allows you to change the portal settings to allow metal being taken through it. it also allows you to increase material gain from trees, rocks, metal nodes etc by up to x3 the original value.

Logsitics and transport is part of the (first time) experience. But personally yea i would say transport a new item manually once but then portal it after that. Same way i set some goal for wood and stone and after i hit that i just spawn it in. Sure knocking down plains pillars is fun but im not going to do it forever

inversely, it allows you to lower the drops to 0.5x of the original value.

Downside is the 0.5x isn't exactly perfect. Take for example trolls. You get 2 troll hide instead of 5. Rounding it down makes sense. But if you kill a 1 star (level 2) troll and drops are supposed to be 2x. Effectly, this should mean normal drops. You'd think it should give 5 troll hide when slayed. It does not. You just get 4 troll hide.

At least plant seeds round up. Giving 2 seeds per plant instead of 1. Otherwise farming would be basically impossible at 0.5x.

I'm not intending to use "cheat" methods to increase items but just allowing metals through portals will cut down a lot of the grind of the game.

Otherwise, setting up another T3 forge, smelter will take a crazy amount of grinding for materials, surtling cores etc

as some other have said i think you can change it in the world settings, other than that the ashlands added in a new portal that allows you to transport any item like ores through it, though youd still have to progress to the point of getting to the ashlands....

Hauling stuff up and down is part of the game's journey. Things likes making outposts, resting in hostile territory, the calm sailing, the planning are all what makes this game unique to me. There's a sort of "dad-game menial task flow state" as you get closer to your destination and building skills along the way, if you don't like that though, you can always mod it to be more like Terraria or something.

It's not quite the same when you've been away from your main base for days and you get there with a ton of goodies in your pocket after overcoming all the obstacles compared to just teleporting everything back in an instant.

you have a seprate game world with empty chest and dump all ore into that then back to original game world go through portal then back to chest grab all the ore then back to other game world boom

That's old tech that isn't needed anymore because of world modifiers, you can just change portal settings to allow ores through portals now.

That article is from over three years ago (posted Mar 9, 2021 according to both Google and archive.org). Unless an article about this game was written within the past year, don't trust it.

Also, if they can't be bothered to put a publishing date on their articles, don't trust it to be up-to-date.
