itemization is angry towards no portals in mistlands and ashlands?
i started a no map, no portals run as a challenge because ashlands went by pretty fast. i am already learning that i need to take forge and upgrade mats with me so i can repair on the road.

as i cruise the wiki, i see that the best flametal gear will require a level 3 black forge to repair. this will require the following mats:

Black marble x10
Yggdrasil wood x10
Black core x5

5 Iron
5 Copper
4 Black marble

5 Iron
8 Copper
2 Mechanical spring

= 339 lbs of mats. black metal pickaxe doesnt use black forge, so you need to carry level 2 regular forge as well:

Stone x4
Coal x4
Wood x10
Copper x6

5 Wood
2 Bronze

= 108 lbs

and if you wear feather cape, you need galdr table for repairs:

Black metal x10
Yggdrasil wood x20
Black core x5
Refined eitr x5

= 190

total, = 637 lbs, 11 slots

even in the cart, this is no small amount of mats. and this doesnt include the mats to make a basic cover for workbench activation. or a shield dome in ashlands for anti-fire.

cart doesnt really work in mistlands because of terrain, and ashlands is hostile to anything wood, which will irreversibly catch fire. i think they just changed smoke bombs to extinguish fire, but that is yet another slot. sailing around the perimeter with a drakkar full of mats doesnt really work because the cones are annoying and the ship will be constantly under attack, but that is probably the best option.

no map, no portals has been fun so far this week; i am looking for bonemass and already cheesed silver gear with stagbreaker. plains seems eminently doable with no maps or portals, and i plan to make a giant multi-crop farm and permanent base there. eventually leaving behind my network of black forest and swamp bases.

but as i look ahead, it seems like the core design of the game has gone off the rails with the last 2 biomes, with the devs adding stone portal as basically a sign of "i give up" trying to design a true open world game. just town portal all your gear back to base like diablo. i cant even imagine trying to find the queen lair in the mistlands, will be next to impossible. and then you need to have enough rest to actually beat her. ugh.

I've been playing no-portal forever, and, unfortunately, I just built a set of portals. My current plan is to limit myself to just a portal in/out of Ashland. If fact, I just realized that I could have just placed the "outside" portal on the small island outpost on the fringe of Ashland and not compromised too much. Currently it's in my current "base" in a queens lair not far from Ashlands.

That said, I've only made a couple of excursions far from my landing site so far, and it's clear that I'll have to make more moves. I'm currently trying to decide how to do that. I made a pretty secure outpost in Ashlands, which took some time, and wasn't easy.

I've since dialed back from hard to normal mode, though, and it is WAY easier, so I can imagine being able to travel a bit, find a calm area, and setup camp without getting pounded at the end of the day with my pants down!

I agree that they took a big step backward in supporting no-portal play, but I think there's a good compromise that can keep the spirit, but "literally" get around the spikes.

Have you considered trying the Raft mod? Then you could build your ship with extra storage and all the crafting benches already on it.

i am not interested in mods at this time. i am also not currently using "exploits," like cart-in-boat.
Nerevar (Banned) May 29, 2024 @ 10:24pm
a cart in a boat isnt an exploit tbh. its just the player beeing clever. glitching trough a wall with a chair is another story.

as for ashlands well you need a big outpost which has all the stations of course and a blast furnace so you dont have to sail metal around. you also need to bring your cauldron etc. so have to use the ships big storage for that. which on no portal has atleast a usefulness to it. make take 2 sails. first to setup the basics and then the rest. might be a good idea to build a base on the rock spires off shore so you dont have to transport anything inland.

if "can only grow in this biome" wasnt a thing no portal would be way more bearable. but that mechanic alone makes it really annoying for food longterm. this is the only mechanic clearly not designed without portals in mind.

thankfully you could live of mashed meat and bonemaw meat in ashlands purely so you wouldnt even need a farm really. but that cuts you short on stamina food sooner or later as sorching medley needs jotun puffs. onions actually grow in ashlands for some reason.

you have to Rebase in mistlands and ashlands. a plains/mistlands penninsula would be the best so you can grow everything there.

then make an ashlands outpost for smelting and the repairs.

thankfully transporting asksvins out of ashlands is still easy on no portal due to the egg meta and well for ashlands biome no map is a non issue given the layout is rather fixed on where it goes along unlike other biomes once you have arrived there.

that does completely and utterly defeat the point of playing no map and no portal.

Yeah, it really is fun. It's easy to get lost at first. And the stagbreaker cheese for silver even works with iron too if you can't find an Elder boss arena.

Luckily the hoe is a low level craft. I was never really one to lay path anywhere back in the day. But it's really great for marking the spawn so you can return with a boss head if you really need. Without the hoe and laying path everywhere, the easiest way to not get lost in no map mode is to keep to shores. Occasional free fish if you build your bases on them too.

11 slots and 600+ pounds, you say? There's a new concept I've heard about that might help. Its called STORING YOUR STUFF ON YOUR LONGSHIP with its 18 slots and no weight limit. Land, make minibase if needed, go do your shopping/refining, pack up base, load ship, off to new places. I hear the scientists are even working on an advanced version that they might call a drakkar whose capacity may make your brain explode!!!

Do you sense sarcasm? Good.

buried iron does not return "too hard" like silver does. so its not findable as easy as silver is. and you get alot less iron from these buried piles.

No portals is a self inflicted state of affairs.

Enjoy it.

Or don't.

thats just for repairs though. doesnt address cooking or other slot-heavy tech.

Ashland still far from done here, been playing since official release ... couple hours a day . On every playthrough it takes months, imagine if no portal no map , xd

Yeah, but you don't need too much for your forge and stuff.

Also, the 0 damage instead of "too hard" is pretty easy to deal with. Just break nearby rocks or stumps if you're not sure you're hitting them. I'd say the real issue with stagbreaker iron farming is it could be anywhere in the swamps (on top of it being smaller). Meanwhile mountain peaks are the first place to check for silver. The higher the better.

Alternatively, if you need a lot of iron but still haven't killed The Elder. A Sealed Tower has a lot of iron. And I mean a lot. Assuming you find it and can handle the mobs inside. I had that happen to me on my last play through. First boss I killed was Moder.

If that happens a "Bag" Icon will show on the mp. I would check it often as well what you describe is common.
IE you do a drive by a forest and then notice the traders Icon appears... after you have left the area!

Again if your doing no mods no "cheats" that's fine you do you. You probably have heard of the online world map generator that will locate where the Trader "Could" be then? There is that if you get frustrated.

Just make sure you sail past the coast of as much Black forest as you can then double check the map a few seconds later in case the update is a bit slow.

i am not using maps. is there a way to find the trader other than combing all black forest?
