Is there a way to extend your inventory later in the game?
I'm several hours in and I'm constantly lacking inventory space. I don't mean weight limit, I mean slots for different items. There are so few of them (slots I mean). And autopickup feature sucks in so much junk that I have to stop to make room for good stuff over and over. Have tried to turn autopickup off, but it takes forever to distinguish good items from bad on the ground manually.
So I wonder if I should push forward to get some extra space later, or I should look for a mod that can help me with that?
How do you personally deal with it?

What you have is what you get. Mods are your only option.

I dont know if there is a way later on, I went right to mods to help.

Not sure how far in you are but eventually you can build a cart which you can pull around and that has space.

My vanilla style is to build little bases everywhere that I dump junk into chests.

Pretty quickly I just switch to mods. Azu player inventory is the go to.

Short answer: no, with the current game you don't get more slots.

You can use mods If you really want this. Another approach is "pocket portal", keep the mats to quickly build a portal to your main base and teleport there when you inventory is full to dump your things, then go back to exploring.

Just dont be a trash can, keep playing, eventually you'll learn what is worth picking up.
Later on you can salvage the "trash" via 1 building, but prolly not what you're looking for.
No more inventory slots upgrade later on, unless you wanna go "Journalist mode" aka mods.

"Several hours in" hints at just started.

If so I assume you are exploring and building basic things, and probably have not yet killed Eythir (the 1st boss, in the Meadows). I am not much further ahead than you and that means that your stage of the game is clear to me. So I have a few simple suggestions:

1) Open the map (m), move the mouse across it. The name might change as you do so. Get a feel for the borders of the meadows biome that you are in, and what biomes are around you. If you have not fully explored your biome's borders.. do.

2) Once you fully explored your biome, you will likely have found the Black Forest (probably more than one) and maybe some other biomes like the Mountains.

- Now look carefully at the map and find a place that is: (A) By the water. (B) Near but at least 100-200m from the Black Forest (you don't want too many of those mobs roaming into your camp before you are ready). (C) Among those places that meet A and B, pick the one that is closer to another biome but at a healthy distance as mobs from those are going to be even more powerful.
- Now, pick a large area at that spot for your base.
- Right now you will build your main home, keeping in mind that there are max distances from the fireplace(s) to various things, from your workbench to others, and from the eventual forge to others. Unfortunately I did not find any decent guide explaining these distances.
- You will need separate areas for a Smelter section/building, beehives, farm, and other things.
- Most importantly, you will need a storage area (maybe a whole building for it, maybe even more) and a place where you will eventually build a portal hub.
- And don't forget a dock.

In other words you are getting started at building a small initial city. The amount of resources will be significant, and different resources will become available as you progress in the game.

Additionally, as someone suggested, you will eventually build portals and it will be worth it to carry the materials for a portal with you. Some portals will be permanent, others will be temporary for a bit (as when you are mining a resource node) and others just momentary to go drop resources and come back.

Also, if you are finding the enemies overwhelming while you don't even understand the controls or basic strategies... you might want to start a new save with easier settings, to carry you through the learning process. You can always return to your original save later.

I hope this helps.

Just go with mods, you will be happier in the end.

Looks like it.
The game is great, but some things are just weird and uncalled for. For example, right from the start I was baffled by the fact that after I kill somebody I have to pause for couple seconds and wait for the body to "explode", before I could pick up the loot. So I was happy to see that there's mod that fixes exactly that. Such a little thing, but it makes the gameplay so much smoother.

I disagree.
Learn to manage your inventory. You can get a cart that can manage some more space, depending on what you are doing (I use it a lot for gathering wood/stone).
Boats will later give you extra space for transportation as well.
And as someone already said. Learn what is needed and what is trash. As a hoarder myself, it can be hard, but it is possible.
The idea to just "get a mod" limit your own creativity on how to manage your game play.
In the end, to each their own.

Other than modding, no. . .

But the longer you play the more you get a feel for what you actually need to be picking up constantly. While EVERY item in the game has SOME use. . .some are more needed than others in much larger quantities. For example, you can ignore most trophies in the long run. It helps to have a few, but you don't need stacks upon stacks of them. Funnily enough, once you find your Traders, you can also ignore most currency items unless you want to doecorate with them.

early enough in game you ll have excess junk. things like stones, resin and Skelton bones and some trophies I usually stop bringing to base. once a chest is full, incinerate some for charcoal.

or use mods like most ppl seem to like

I finally get my first portal, which I was looking forward to since I was fed up of the stupid metal hikes... only to get "An item prevents you from teleporting". Upon research I find out that most metals are blocked from teleporters.

Seriously?!!! I understand having to hike it until you get teleporters, but blocking metals from it... feels incredibly stupid, almost a thing of making you grind for grind's sake, not for a real purpose.

At least there's a mod for that. Going to install my first mod, I'm not putting up with pointless hikes.

Just use the world options. No need for a mod.

World modifiers allow for the teleporting of metals/ores. If you do choose a mod, Valheim Plus has had this option available for some time. Either way, you have more than one way to accomplish this.

Nope. No way currently ingame to increase your inventory.
