If you're concerned and want to keep that world optimally playable with the new content, avoid getting too close to the Ashlands (and the Deep North, for that matter) until the update comes out. Fortunately, this should be somewhat easier than it was for the Mistlands, as both the remaining biomes are clustered around the poles.
characters are seperately saved from worldmaps. so characters are never not able to be used in new versions so far.
worldfiles normally work aswell with new updates and spawn all new content EXCEPT : if you already explored the ashlands placeholder biome your world is screwed and wont spawn the new content without external help.
if you never went there it should spawn in totally fine and you can just keep playing your current world.
no update has ever forced a restart. the devs are aware of how much people love thier bases and they dont want to force a reset aslong as they can get updates working. thier testing guy has already tested ashlands with a world from 2021 and it spawned in just fine.
the current ashlands placeholder biome is found along the southern edge of any worldmap. dont set foot there until it gets released and youre fine.
the same is true for the deep north on the northern end of the map.
TDLR :
aslong as you dont go to ashlands now you will be able to play ashlands with the update once it releases. but its still about 2 months off by now i assume. maybe 3 if unlucky.
My wife and I still occasionally play on a map seed generated prior to Hearth & Home, and the aforementioned mod has spawned tar pits, frost caves, and entire swathes of Mistlands biomes following their respective updates without issue, despite how zealous we've been in our world exploration. Strongly recommend considering it as a contingency if you don't want to load a new map from scratch. Link is below.

So that might look a bit odd, if there's a new area nearby.
Or what?

It lets you set protected areas around anything you want to save and then it resets the rest of the world to a fresh unexplored state. Then as you re-explore areas like Mistlands and Ashlands get regenerated with new content.
I've used this mod several times and its worked great everytime. Setting up the protected arease was easy, just add some co-ordinates to a config file and then run the mod.
Keep in mind it will erase everything that isn't in the protected areas, even the trees you cut down and ore deposits you mined will be reset. So be dure to back up your wold before using the mod, just in case you forgot to protect some distant outpost the first time you use it.
I hope this is useful to someone. Good luck and good hunting o7
Anywhere that has been "explored" (within 500m of the players' travels) will not accept any "new" updated content in those areas, but all unexplored areas WILL accept the new content.
