Ashlands update
Can anybody tell me if current save files you have will still be playable with new content once the Ashlands update drops?

Me and my GF just got to plains, and it would be really lame, if we had to start a save file to enjoy new Ashlands content.

I started before mistlands was added and I didnt have to start over, so I'm assuming it will be the same, but it's hard to say.

The way it has worked so far, if you get to within a certain distance of a given area before the release, it will fill in basically blank, just the basic land terrain, and once the update hits, that already filled in land will continue to be just basic empty land, but perhaps with all the new monster spawns. Any areas affected by the update that you haven't yet explored will populate with all the new content as intended once you discover them. Save files remain fully playable and compatible, but previously explored land that lacked content will be permanently set in that empty state.

If you're concerned and want to keep that world optimally playable with the new content, avoid getting too close to the Ashlands (and the Deep North, for that matter) until the update comes out. Fortunately, this should be somewhat easier than it was for the Mistlands, as both the remaining biomes are clustered around the poles.

was asked MULTIPLE times by now.

characters are seperately saved from worldmaps. so characters are never not able to be used in new versions so far.

worldfiles normally work aswell with new updates and spawn all new content EXCEPT : if you already explored the ashlands placeholder biome your world is screwed and wont spawn the new content without external help.

if you never went there it should spawn in totally fine and you can just keep playing your current world.

no update has ever forced a restart. the devs are aware of how much people love thier bases and they dont want to force a reset aslong as they can get updates working. thier testing guy has already tested ashlands with a world from 2021 and it spawned in just fine.

the current ashlands placeholder biome is found along the southern edge of any worldmap. dont set foot there until it gets released and youre fine.

the same is true for the deep north on the northern end of the map.

TDLR :

aslong as you dont go to ashlands now you will be able to play ashlands with the update once it releases. but its still about 2 months off by now i assume. maybe 3 if unlucky.

Just in case you do accidentally reveal areas of a biome before it's updated, there IS a mod out there called "Upgrade World" that is usually patched to match any major change to the game's biomes. You can make use of this mod to reseed, in real-time, any biome that generates as blank following an official update from Iron Gate.

My wife and I still occasionally play on a map seed generated prior to Hearth & Home, and the aforementioned mod has spawned tar pits, frost caves, and entire swathes of Mistlands biomes following their respective updates without issue, despite how zealous we've been in our world exploration. Strongly recommend considering it as a contingency if you don't want to load a new map from scratch. Link is below.

It's very likely going to work, just keep in mind, that thos ashland areas you already discovered and explored will remain unchanged after the update.
So that might look a bit odd, if there's a new area nearby.

If your like me and spent a lot of time building a fortress and don't want to let that time/effort end up wasted you might want to try the Upgrade Worlds mod available at

https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/JereKuusela/Upgrade_World/

It lets you set protected areas around anything you want to save and then it resets the rest of the world to a fresh unexplored state. Then as you re-explore areas like Mistlands and Ashlands get regenerated with new content.

I've used this mod several times and its worked great everytime. Setting up the protected arease was easy, just add some co-ordinates to a config file and then run the mod.

Keep in mind it will erase everything that isn't in the protected areas, even the trees you cut down and ore deposits you mined will be reset. So be dure to back up your wold before using the mod, just in case you forgot to protect some distant outpost the first time you use it.

I hope this is useful to someone. Good luck and good hunting o7

The way I understand it, the player has a 500m radius around themselves (or it might be 500m in every direction from the player), which gets "explored" as they travel around the map. This is much larger than the swath that gets revealed, ("fog of war" that gets lifted), as the player explores.

Anywhere that has been "explored" (within 500m of the players' travels) will not accept any "new" updated content in those areas, but all unexplored areas WILL accept the new content.
