What's the point of raids if you can portal (or just run) away and let it fizzle without any damage done?
Here's another thing I don't quite understand. Why even have raids if you don't have to fight them off or build a strong fortifications against them? I've spent hours digging and raising ground to build a raid-proof fortress with kind of a drawbridge in case of emergency until I realized that I don't actually have to defend my base and if I'm away the area becomes inactive and nothing happens.

But the raid will still be there when you return.

No. It disappears after some time.
I don't mind fending it off every once in a while, but if I don't feel like it I just portal away and do something else, and when I get back it's like nothing happened.

Raids are good. It's a mass delivery of resources and easy weapon exp.

If you don't want to deal with raids, just turn them off with world modifiers.

Specifically the raid disappears when another raid begins somewhere else.

Raids are one of the best things in the game currently.

Other then raids there appears to other random events.

If you build an earthen walled base there is no point. You can stay inside and just let the raid timer expire but it costs the time it takes to set up a raid proof base. If you don't want to take the time to build a raid proof base you can just turn raids off. The devs made raids and dealing with them a choice instead of a requirement.

Because most of us don't want to run away and wish to defend our base to the end. Sure, you can raise the ground so literally nothing can get through it that's your choice, but you're kinda missing out on the entire mechanic thing.

With world modifiers I think raids are where they need to be for everybody. I leave them at normal, because I want some challenge. . .but I also generally construct my base so I don't constantly trigger them doing things either. It's not too much extra space to spread certain things out more.

In raids, the mobs are primarily after *you* - your structures are just in the way and/or nice side targets.

Lately I like to build slightly sturdier than normal 'pest control' barriers around bases. If using portals I like to make three special portal pairs to connect the innermost part of my base with 'redoubts' out near the limit of raid spawn locations. The exact layout depends upon terrain of course but an example would be redoubts to the North, Southeast, and Southwest. To avoid confusion, lay out the matching portals inside the base with the same orientation.

I'm wanting to do this as a 'bat cave' in my next base - a hole in the floor in the middle of the main base level that drops me right in the center of the three redoubt portals.

You can make earthen walls or a moat and still fully intend to fight every time a raid shows up. But you may not always be immediately prepared when a raid happens and need to gear up and get some proper food in you, etc., so it's not a bad idea to proof your base against log trolls and such. Also, earthen walls are the only perimeter defense that can keep bats and deathsquitoes out because spikes can only be placed on the ground.

Honestly, if the game had better defensive building options and log troll attacks couldn't just clip through and damage ~8 meters of buildings/walls, earthen walls and moats would be less attractive options and probably more people would find them to be too much trouble or too restrictive or too unsightly to bother with.

It doesn't when you portal away.

It only ends if you remain in the zone for two minutes; whether you fight the monsters or not.

No, Mharr is correct as I've watched it happen and used it several times in single player, multiplayer, and on a server before the devs added the sliders. It was how we protected our bases before we learned how to use earthen walls.

When everyone left the raid circle the raid paused and the raid circle remained on the map until a new raid spawned in another location which caused the original raid to disappear. It appears that only one raid can be active on the map at a time.

You can test this for yourself if you build multiple bases and don't mind not accessing the one in the raid circle.

Edit - and not all raids are exactly 2 minutes long. The duration varies based on the type of raid. If you leave the raid circle it pauses. If you kill one of the raid spawned creatures a new one spawns. You can game this too by running around your base in a circle and letting the creatures follow you until the timer expires. At this point in time creatures will leave the area using their usual mode of travel until the number of that type creature reduces to the non-raid total allowed in that biome.

If you lead the 2 trolls that spawn during a troll raid around the outside of your base, when the timer expires one will walk away and it will despawn when it gets 96 tiles away from the nearest player. You can't actually see that happen but if you allow enough time and then sprint after it you will never find the troll that wandered away (unless the other one despawns first). We found that out when we were trying to gather enough troll hide to fully upgrade 4 sets and when we needed enough coins to buy 4 belts from Haldor.

Just choose not to cheese the raid and it won't be useless
