why is it so hard to join public servers?
What was the design decision behind this? I'd love to be able to hop into a public dedicated server but it seems like every single server is password protected. What am I missing?

This is a "play with friends/trusted people" type of game. If any random could join, they'd pop in, break your stuff, steal what they want, and you'd never see them again.

There's a LFG subforum here. Use that to find people to play with.

Can't you build a ward to protect your settlement?

Wards just stop players from opening chests within their radius. Constructions, and the ward itself, can still be damaged and destroyed. Also, nobody wants to build a ward every few meters, even if it did protect their stuff.

It's far easier to find people that aren't jerks and just play together on a protected server, rather than hope a jerk doesn't join the server.

that doesnt work vs players at all.

and its TOO easy to just cheat and ruin a public world in this game. hence why the password is enforced. dont play non password public servers. they are all dead. for a reason.

Due to the ability to manipulate the terrain of the game(and grief other players or mar their efforts in some way) and finite state of various resources for progression in the game, many servers are pw/green listed to help with those issues and more.

It doesnt protect your efforts from every potential way players go out of their way to grief others.

That's an understatement. Anyone can spawn a developer hammer that one-shots every creature, structure, tree and rock in a wide radius and bring it to any server they like, and that's without even considering client mods.
