How Does Difficulty Scaling Work With Friends?
My brother has been playing this game long before I decided to start playing and he said it that playing on our new server is way harder than what he was used to. The server has 4 people in it, where only 3 of the 4 are constantly active. One of those people has like a maxed out character, and was curious if because that person joined our server, the server is now set to scaling a bunch of harder encounters? My brother was explaining that Draugers shouldn't take that much damage, or we should be experiencing so many Troll Raids.

there are also world settings, such as difficulty (increased \ received damage taken\given) and raid frequency can be changed too.

If that maxed out character went and killed a higher level boss, then the higher level raids would unlock. This is one of the reasons why it is recommended to only play with friends and not strangers.

Also take a look at what the difficulty settings are. Maybe your brother's old server was set lower. Difficulty settings could change how much damage mobs can take and also how often raids occur. Though raid timing depends a lot on random chance and you may just be having an unlucky streak.

As far as I know, the multi-player scaling is basically a hit point buff to mobs depending on how many people are in range at the time. It doesn't look at player levels or gear.

Gotcha! My brother said his server was set to very easy for the combat setting, and that our server is set at the next level above which i believe is "easy," if i am not mistaken. I didn't think it would of jumped in such an exponential way lol.

Raids have a chance to happen every 45 minutes I beleive. They will only happen if a character is standing within render distance of 3 or more structures listed below. So if your brother was an explorer and rarely at a base the events might not trigger. I had made a campfire, portal and workbench in the middle of nowhere and within minutes was attacked by wolves!

Artisan table, Bed, Black forge, Blast furnace, Bonfire, Campfire, Charcoal kiln, Dragon bed, Eitr refinery, Fermenter, Forge, Galdr table, Hanging brazier, Hearth, Portal, Sconce, Smelter, Spinning wheel, Standing green-burning iron torch, Standing blue-burning iron torch, Standing Brazier, Standing iron torch, Standing wood torch, Stonecutter, Stone Oven, Ward, Windmill, and the Workbench!

I just looked in the wiki to see the exact numbers. every time that players are near one another the enemies recieve a boost. per wiki:

Creatures gain +30% more effective health per each additional player within 100 meters. E.g. 3 players = +60% effective health.
This is updated whenever the creature takes damage.

Creatures gain +4% more damage per each additional player within 100 meters. E.g. 3 players = +8% damage.
This is updated whenever the creature deals damage.

note that it does not occours if you are in different parts of the map.
