Valheim

Valheim

Freedom of building - any other games that offer as much freedom to build things?
Love how you can basically build to your imaginations limit in this game.

Many other survival games seem to limit building to just the necessary. Giving you just enough to make a basic structure for protection and all your crafting stations, without giving a lot of freedom for creativity.

Ive also played Satisfactory which has a pretty open ended building system... Just curious if anyone else knows any other games like this that have as much open ended building options as valheim?

There's Conan Exiles where you can build some impressive structures, and use them as bases that can be assaulted by players/NPC raids alike. You can also recruit NPCs (either through enslavement or some new tavern system that I've yet to try) or tame beasts to defend it.

Then there's Grounded. No PvP, but is a unique take on the survival genre (you're shrunk to the size of a bug, so enemy variety is much more different than what we're used to fighting in most other survival games). Lots of good QOL features, and again your base can be attacked by bugs. You can build some pretty impressive bases, or nice towers to zipline all across the yard.

And then I'm interested in Enshrouded, which is coming out in a month. Played the demo a bit, and the building is much more precise than other games. Normally you build with large square boxes, but this one allows overlap, so you can make far more shapes and size things to your exact specifications. There's also full terrain terraforming, so if you want to dig into the side of a mountain and create a base in there, you can. You'll also have to save, recruit, and house other NPCs as part of your progression through the game.

Sunkenland has a decent and free ranging build system. Its a FPS Survival .. still in development and needs some work but I found it pretty fun, though I am not a FPS guy.

If you don't mind an interstellar experience the building system in No Man's Sky is pretty extensive though still suffering from bugs and artificially imposed limits on base sizes and number of parts. Its frequently on sale for as much as 50% off. There's a "show me your bases" thread on the forums over there that you can check out if you want to get an idea of what you can do with it.

Yeah but with No Man's Sky the dev team will arbitrarily reset the universe generation with no warning, changing the planet (in my experience, the colour scheme and the creatures/plants on it, as well as the hotspot locations so I lost all my power hookups).

So you go through the effort of building a base, only to have it no longer be where you want it.

And that's assuming other players don't track your base down and claim then grief the surrounding areas.

It's like Hello Games goes out of their way to screw over their player base.

I've played every base building game known....best games besides Valheim are Rust (on a good PvE server with blueprints unlocked), Conan....and Fallout 76. Fallout 76 has probably the most amount of options for how to build a base, but many are paid to unlock.

They took a lot of heat the 2 times they changed planet generation and they have avoided it since then. The other problems you mention can be avoided by not uploading your base so that other players can't find it or by playing in offline mode so that there are no other players in your NMS experience.

I'm not shilling for NMS. They are deficient in several ways particularly with QA and bug fixes. Valheim's building system is superior to NMS it just lacks variety in comparison but that is to be expected from a game that is still in EA compared to game that has been full release for over 7 years.

I assume you're familiar with The Sims. It's my preferred game for when I want to do some serious building.

You may take a look at Wurm Online.

But be warned, it got about 100 skills of which most are related; thus meaning AN AWFUL LOT of grinding and floor and roofs cover an entire tile, instead of having smaller pieces too.

On top of that, it's F2P up to lvl 20; after that you need to pay for your premium and in case you want to settle down, need to pay for upkeep of your area as well.

But, the community is in general pretty good and friendly - depends a bit at the server you're playing at - it got PvP if you like that and when sailing you won't have to deal with waves high enough to cover a brontosaurus.

there is no other game quite like valheim in this regard. yet.
keep your eyes peeled for "Enshrouded" and "Light no Fire". they seem to me to be the most likely Val-a-likes, but I don't know if their respective building systems will be as "free".

Empyrion and Space Engineers have good building systems.

If you ever wanted to build (legally distinct from) LEGO vehicles and drive them around, Trailmakers has excellent systems for that.

I like to build on Raft. It's pretty fun. Lots of pieces, lots of opportunity to use your imagination. Sky's the limit, with a Rafty, nautical theme.

I am having a blast in Lego Fortnite, definately takes the cake on helping me wait for Ashlands. The building in lego fortnight has less restrictions than Valheim. You can build 100 strory buildings if you want. Dont knock it till you try it. Excellent survival game!

7 Days to Die is pretty much the best building game, I think. With structural integrity, block and terrain crafting/razing, with AI that navigates it. Teardown is also a good one, but it has different game rules.
