Then there's Grounded. No PvP, but is a unique take on the survival genre (you're shrunk to the size of a bug, so enemy variety is much more different than what we're used to fighting in most other survival games). Lots of good QOL features, and again your base can be attacked by bugs. You can build some pretty impressive bases, or nice towers to zipline all across the yard.
And then I'm interested in Enshrouded, which is coming out in a month. Played the demo a bit, and the building is much more precise than other games. Normally you build with large square boxes, but this one allows overlap, so you can make far more shapes and size things to your exact specifications. There's also full terrain terraforming, so if you want to dig into the side of a mountain and create a base in there, you can. You'll also have to save, recruit, and house other NPCs as part of your progression through the game.
So you go through the effort of building a base, only to have it no longer be where you want it.
And that's assuming other players don't track your base down and claim then grief the surrounding areas.
It's like Hello Games goes out of their way to screw over their player base.
I'm not shilling for NMS. They are deficient in several ways particularly with QA and bug fixes. Valheim's building system is superior to NMS it just lacks variety in comparison but that is to be expected from a game that is still in EA compared to game that has been full release for over 7 years.
But be warned, it got about 100 skills of which most are related; thus meaning AN AWFUL LOT of grinding and floor and roofs cover an entire tile, instead of having smaller pieces too.
On top of that, it's F2P up to lvl 20; after that you need to pay for your premium and in case you want to settle down, need to pay for upkeep of your area as well.
But, the community is in general pretty good and friendly - depends a bit at the server you're playing at - it got PvP if you like that and when sailing you won't have to deal with waves high enough to cover a brontosaurus.
keep your eyes peeled for "Enshrouded" and "Light no Fire". they seem to me to be the most likely Val-a-likes, but I don't know if their respective building systems will be as "free".
