just find a place with a nice view.
especially worth it when starting out with the copper and tin
While you advance you will probably build bases in all biomes, even if it seems tricky at times, maybe just to test if you can.
However I would recommend building most bases close to the ocean, since you will definitely travel by boat quite a lot, even if you set your portals to "easy". Exploration is one of the biggest feats of the game, sticking on the starting island won't get you far, so having quick access to the ocean is always a bonus point. It also reduces lag if you're experiencing any, that's because there are far less things to load in the ocean.
I would strongly recommend digging trenches or building earth walls around all bases that you plan to use for taming and farming. If raids enter your base they will attack those locations, killing your tames and destroying your fields. So you'll want to keep mobs out at all costs, even if it takes an hour to set up proper defences.
You don't need to do that for outposts that merely hold portals, a workbench, a chest, etc. because you'll be going in and out fast without spending much time there.
You can also build tree houses or on top of big rocks, but keep in mind that bigger mobs can damage those if trying to hit you, destroying them in the process, taking away your builds foundation, leaving it to fall apart within minutes. So if you want to build something like this, stay out of their range.
For your first base, just build close to spawn. You will return regularly to switch skills, so having a little base there with a portal later will help a lot.
As a last tip, scout forests for areas with many mushrooms, berries, thistles, etc., mark them on your map and maybe build a little base or at least a portal close by for quick farming every now and then. You will need those for many recipes, even in late game.
I'm sure everyone asks about world seeds. But anyone got an "easy" seed they can recommend?
I've tried a few, nothing is sparking my interest.
Seeds more or less arent classified as "easy" If but that you mean you want one where you can walk to all bosses with vendors on the same land mass, there's been a few threads recently about that that I've also posted some seed options in that regard.
As for flat terrain to build on, well, thats why you learn to make and craft a hoe and pickaxe as you progress in the game. Flattening terrain is pretty much on the player to do.
That also said, there are various abandoned villages with flat terrain spots, draugr villages with similar you can clear and there are some semi rare large stone circles in the meadows that have a large patch for building on that are flat too. Early in the game, adapting such places for builds becomes a bit of a norm (also recommend making a "starter base" near the boss trophy hanging stones (ie your starting spawn) and later adding a portal just so you can get there efficiently and back to where you're progressing too of course. Some actually opt to make a main base in that area and fortify then have smaller satellite bases in the different biomes as needed thus centralizing all portals.
In the Meadows and not close to other more dangerous biomes such as the Black Forest is the safest and quickest. On the coast is ideal as you can collect flint. A flat area makes it easier to build structure as you can easily level it with a hoe so that your buildings have a solid foundation.
If you want a challenge, build in the Meadows with the Black Forest within a short running distance. Enemies in the Black Forest are stronger and some will wander to your base area. Black Forest is the next area you will explore after you have developed yourself in the Meadows.
Sometimes you find an existing building not far from the spawn area that you can repair after building a workbench. You can also build a workbench and demolish the building to quickly obtain timber .
My first main base is then in a nice flat area in the meadows, ideally near a coast so I can build a port and boat house, but not too far from black forest so I don't have to build a 2nd base there.
After that I build small bases in each biome preferably on or near a coast. Main base after that is set up in the plains and its usually the largest. After that Mistlands gets a small place. Just enough for a portal and a farm.
2. In meadow
3. Near open ocean (not river)
4. On island if possible (small meadow island with custom bridge)
5. Very close to the black forest
6. The main island have mountains and plains biome (so u can bring wolf and lox to your base)
This location can be your first base location, even for the end game town location.
Because whenever your friends wanted to join the world, they can easily visit your town since its still close from the spawn area
A lot of folk including myself , oh wait up, i find that i get attacked by trolls or such if a stay to long.
many posts complain of the raids when all they want to do is build a nice place.
So I suggest you abandon your dream for awhile until you are past moder.
reason is it takes awhile to build a base even simple and you have to build an outpost in or near the biome you are facing.
eg iron from the swamp, build in the trees.
copper from the black forest, renovate a stone ruin with wood and put a big wide fence around it with stakes to protect you.
when you get to the plains, build on top of one of those large tall rocks you can make a nice place up there.
so i guess you wish to make a big base then use the portals to get around.
you will miss out on all the serpent steaks if you go that route.
the game i am in right now has a huge meadows area which might suit you.
it has a terrifying swamp with tons of crypts in it for iron also.
Do it near the water and next to black forrest.
There you can get tin, copper that is important to crafting metal wapons.
You can also easy gather wood, rock in black forrest and meadows.
There are typical some okay spots.
If you are going a little bit with your build then have one or several buildings
one for teleporters, and one for +50 boxes of storage, an area for cooking and all stuff, and some crafting near your storage.. a guess make the building like 8 wide and 40 long with a first floor for example teleporters and your bed. you need corewood for the strong wood beams to carry the roof of such a building.
Els a tip stack your crates on a shelf like system where you build the self manuly with the small wood and then put the crates on the slef.
there can be like 3 crates on top of each other so it save some space.
Also there are allot of stuff in the game. Some people have one box for one item type and then put signs on them but i find this to be kind of difficult to find what you need since its so big with example +50 boxes.. Instead i like to put stuff from x biome in their own boxes next to each other. And raw meat in another, and cooked food in another ect ect.
Well its up to you.
Regarding a harbour.. if you want to build a pier then use your hoe to raise the land below water and then put the big square rock foundations on that, it will look nice :-)
You dont have to overbild things a natural look also look nice ;-)
Here's a fun idea I over heard while watching a live stream.
Lure a sea monster into a molt.
Now if that even possible, can they be tamed, or say I trap one in my molt, far enough from my base. But will it just despawn? I kinda think that's the case lol
-I'll have to google what can be tamed.
