I use the bonemass ability anytime I get into a tricky spot - say a starred seeker (beat my first 2 star last night that was scary) or multiple seekers and a seeker soldier.
This is also a deliberate (it seems) skill check for your character skills. If you don't have a high run/jump skill you are going to have a significantly harder time than if you did.
The problem is really the topography of this biome. It is just not fun to play.
Do you have head lamp and the wisp light? Those both go a long way to help with the mist and darkness.
If you Mod the mist out you will NEVER go back to vanilla. Which is such a pity as the concept is excellent.
But the irony is that "The Mistlands" works best when you take the mist out... A year down the road and I'm still struggling with the inherent contradictions in that!
Come on, do you think I'm stupid? Of course I have these items.
Im not complaining about "the darkness". I just cant handle the topography of this biome.
Im not satisfied with the Mistland Biome as well, but im not complaining about the "Mist"-Factor. I dont want to mod that out. I just can't handle the landscape of that area.
But I also hate traveling in this biome. Even with the feather cape.
And the mist also sucks, because the biome looks absolutely stunning without the stupid mist.
Eh, idk, I'd say the jump skill is a little low for what you will dealing with in the mistlands. You will be using a lot of stamina to climb and the taller peaks will probably not be accessible.
Its hard to say though as I obviously cant compare it directly.
Personally, I'd get your jump to about where your run skill is now. Practice in the mountains maybe?
Anyway I find the topography challenging in a fun way. You have to approach situations completely differently than you do in the plains - and that is a good thing.
The topography really depends on the seed. While many areas of the biome can have challenging topography(intentional to also give the slow fall/no fall damage cloak merit), having explored many different maps mistlands biomes, I've found some really nice areas with pretty easy to traverse terrain as well.
That said it is my least liked biome but I understand why the devs did as they did with the biome's environmental challenges. Ashlands I expect to be actually even more of a discouraging challenge for some.
Also, the addition of horror insects was a bit too much and out of topic with the theme.
So yes, ideally, it needs a rework/remake with addition of dvergr followers/friends.
Not saying I agree, but for the sake of discussion what would replace them?
You will only frustrate yourself further trying to jump the tops of the different rocks/spires in the area when you're first exploring. I also used to hate this biome immensely when it first released, but having learned how to traverse it and survive in it, I find it quite charming. The key is to manage your stamina pool: to not rapidly deplete what you have trying to zip through the location because you could encounter insects and/or a gjall at any moment.
Bring extra wisps from your fountain with you and collect ygg wood as you go. Drop torches as you navigate a path and give yourself expanded visibility, creating a visible way back to your point of entry into the biome: the torches are not a primary target for enemies, who will leave them alone, though they can be destroyed by splash damage from area attacks. They also require no workbench radius to place. Put them on the ground against spires or atop ledges/terrain objects you don't intend to destroy.
Remember to take your time. Go in rested. Have emergency portal materials. Wait for your stamina's recharge if you must go up a steep incline to reach the next valley. You don't need to always run from enemies; often, walking away just enough to recover so you can parry and retaliate is sufficient. Activate Eikthyr if you absolutely must get out of dodge in a hurry.
I hope you manage to find success in the biome and overcome it.
