My best tips:

  • Bring enough wood to make temporary beds and firepits under the overhangs of Frost Caves for shelter letting you sleep and get rested.

  • Get the wolf cape asap to protect from the freezing cold. Only need a workbench to craft it.

  • Eikthyr Power greatly helps traversing the mountains. Dock the boat as close to the mountain as possible for quick loading.

Diggy hole. Abuse the terrain and make it bow to your will. Dragons can't break what's under ground. My battlefield setup with Modder puts the trenches of Pachendale to shame. And her ability to let you sail wherever you damn well please is worth the low level boss rush.

Don't throw your spear at a drake, unless you like the idea of watching it travel directly into the centre of the drake's body but somehow not count as a hit (because the hitboxes are so flawless in this game :steamfacepalm:), and travel cleanly through the drake to then fly off the mountain. At which point you can either just abandon it or spend up to an hour looking for it (give up after an hour, since at that point it will despawn anyways).

Even if you're already in Mistlands in full upgraded Carapace Armor, Two star wolves will still shred you to nothing, so always be cautious at night. Made that mistake getting another Moder trophy, was doing fine, then when I was out of stamina a two star wolf comes at me and it was game over.

If swamps didn’t teach you to keep an eye on your stamina bar, mountains surely will.

So keep an eye on your stamina bar. When it is possible, try not to sprint. Go slow and keep your stamina bar above 50%.
I’m sure you can handle a single wolf easily. Probably 2-3 wolves wouldn’t be a problem either if you are prepared. However, if you get attacked by multiple wolves while your stamina bar is low, you won’t be able to fight… and you won’t be able to run away either.

So my approach (even after almost 4000 hours) is to go slow and be ready to fight or flee at any moment.
When climbing steep slopes, there is no big danger of wolves so i use the whole stamina bar to climb as soon as possible. When traversing flatter areas I walk slowly and keep my stamina bar above 50%. As I walk, I scan the surrounding for high rocks to use as a safe place if I got attacked by multiple wolves.

If you didn’t use tasty mead yet, now is a good time to start using it.

doesn't matter how tough you are, you'll be killed at some point

PRO TIP : have a portal nearby, have a frost resist mead at home for a death run

finding silver before the wishbone:
- silver nodes are usually at higher elevations
- if you see a small broken wooden hut, there is usually a silver node somewhere close to it
- consider the size of all silver nodes - star shaped, if you are at higher elevations and see patches of flat snow where a large star shaped node could fit in, try to dig a bit to check, chance is good you might find something
- you can tame a pack of wolves easily by digging a hole and 'body luring' them into it, build some elevated hut with fire access, throw some raw meat into the hole and wait until they tame... with a pack of 4+ wolves, your life might get easier *dont lead them to attack the ice golems, they will get obliterated
- capturing an old stone fort in the mountains and putting a portal in it, might be a good mining base

Some great replies, so far. Personally, I love the Mountain biome. It's probably my favorite. I like the challenge. I like that a single silver node will put you into a full set of wolf/drake; and two nodes is certainly all the silver you'll ever need.

I like the weather changes. The drakes are fun to kill with fire arrows.

Am still trying to decide the very best shield for parrying the Stone Golems.

Hmmm ... with another words, we humans love the agony of choice right?

Or with the words from Yoda, Do it or don't there is no try.

Yep, right now I am using the Iron Buckler.

You can clear nearly 200 silver from two nodes but fully upgraded Frostner[valheim.fandom.com] will use 120 of that and is arguably the most valuable weapon in your inventory as you progress into the later biomes. Draugr Fang[valheim.fandom.com] isn't far behind and save enough for Himmin Afl[valheim.fandom.com] as well. But since each player has their own style as well as favorite weapon types (bow, sword, etc.) you could experiment with an Arena and try them yourself against a 2-star nasty[valheim.fandom.com] .

Put on world modifiers x 3 resources then go mine silver. Get all the silver gear & weapons you could ever want. Twice.

Set up a temporary base in a central part of the mountain with a clear(or you can clear it yourself)path to the coast so you can pile all your silver there and then cart them down and ship them to your main base easy. Work only during the day to minimize danger. Seriously even a 1* wolf will wreck full silver gear in 2-3 hits.

Don't jump. It's tempting when traversing mountains, especially when going up, but just sprint. Jumping uses up considerably more stamina and the trade-off usually isn't worth it. Just sprint. And never use all your bar.

Stand down hill from the Spearing Golem when fighting them. Many of their attacks will miss over your head. The Clubbing Golems it won't help you. >:)
