Don't put all your eggs in the same basket. I have four breeders that are in a separate building than the food chicken and I can always get eggs from them. Eggs then get into the heated food chicken building with more room. Also I have spare eggs at two separate locations. Just too expensive to lose them to some unfortunate bat or ghost attack.

I have a little 3x3 egg house with 6-8 chickens. If I'm going to spend time at my base I'll feed the chickens 1 seed each and they'll start to lay eggs. As long as you keep picking them up they'll lay more. I can get about 2.5 eggs/seed. I stay close enough so I hear the "pffft" sound when they lay an egg. You can get a lot that way while working close by. I have a couple hundred eggs now. If I need chicken meat or feathers I'll harvest the egg layers and set out a new set of eggs.

don't forget - if you've collected a bunch of dandelion over the life of the game that you just have sitting around - you can feed that to your chickens too

Usually with some spices and slow cook in the oven.

Keep a stash of maybe 10 eggs somewhere to restock your chickens in case some disaster manages to wipe out all your chickens. You can hatch them in perfect safety inside a troll cave or burial chamber or crypt buy building a campfire inside and building a 3-high wall of signs around it so chicks cant wander into the fire and then just dumping unstacked eggs near it. Troll caves are probably best just so you dont have to search the whole place to find the chickens when its harvest time. God help you if you try it in an ice cave... :P
There are autobreeder designs which will let you feed chickens a bunch of food so they can lay eggs without population limit issues. (I usually combine boar, wolf and chicken autobreeders into a single building, but thats personal taste. You *can* combine a Lox autobreeder into it as well but its a pain in the ass and not really a good idea for various reasons.)

Elevate your fires so the chickens only get cooked when you want them to.

There are a few good automated chicken breeding/harvesting videos on youtube but be mindful to pick ones that are 9 or less months old as there was a change to them around then in an update.

Like any breeding farms, height is often used to ensure that the eggs and chickens are constantly breeding. Built too close and they'll stop breeding. 12 high is a common standard but 14-16 would be slightly better imo.
