There are autobreeder designs which will let you feed chickens a bunch of food so they can lay eggs without population limit issues. (I usually combine boar, wolf and chicken autobreeders into a single building, but thats personal taste. You *can* combine a Lox autobreeder into it as well but its a pain in the ass and not really a good idea for various reasons.)
There are a few good automated chicken breeding/harvesting videos on youtube but be mindful to pick ones that are 9 or less months old as there was a change to them around then in an update.
Like any breeding farms, height is often used to ensure that the eggs and chickens are constantly breeding. Built too close and they'll stop breeding. 12 high is a common standard but 14-16 would be slightly better imo.
