So, I have seen that happening in some swamps (lots of enemies) and other swamps are relatively tame. It just seems to be an RNG thing. The first swamp I went in was a swamp that happened to have bonemass in it and I ran into a relatively dense location of 9 spawners and two nearby abomination spawners alongside oozes and leeches. That was before wraiths were even part of the equation if I missed my daytime window while crypt hunting/exploring.
It was like hitting a brick wall at full sprinting speed while naked.
Other large swamps have just had a few draugers and oozes and the occasional leech with sporadic spawner clusters.
The swamp is a stamina check, and it is a patience check for iron.
me: "Ha, it's just a swamp, I got this."
swamp: "Hold my beer."
Stamina is essentially energy/fuel and without it, you can't do hardly anything except stand there and get hit.
Suggestions:
1 BE VERY PATIENT AND METHODICAL.
2 Take your time and build elevated roads/ramps/walks etc.
3 Force yourself to stay dry (not wet).
4 Make good use of fires and stay rested.
5 NEVER be in the swamp when not rested.
6 Have Eikthyr's power ready as an emergency escape.
7 Build well-protected bases at the edges of the biome.
8 Eat high stamina food.
9 Use poison resist potion.
10 Leave the swamp before sundown.
Invading the swamp involves a steady methodical use of your infrastructure to overcome the biome (FIRST). The swamp biome is somewhat subtle ... you don't realize how badly it has degraded your energy until it's too late. The swamp sucks you in and then surrounds you with enemies and eats you. It is one of the single best RPG environs in gaming history.
You can beat the swamp, but if and only if you are willing to do what is necessary to adjust your playstyle accordingly.
The swamp is the "hold my beer" biome.
I generally agree with your post but a tiny nitpick. I'm pretty sure this is impossible as the swamp always has light rain in it. Even using a fire to dry off is pointless as the second you move out of shelter you will have the wet debuff again.
Now the rested bonus is a must though that's for sure.
For moving out into the swamp itself, I go on a scouting run to find those crypts and mark them on the map. I also take the hoe and level ground everywhere so that I am walking on mud instead of in the water. Either bring wood, or cut wood (this aggros the local residents) to build LOTS of workbenches everywhere. I enclose each workbench in a wooden fence so they are harder to knock out. Abominations in particular will try to kill them when you run across one. 34 wood (10 for bench and 24 for fence) will create a single anti-spawning point, so it takes a bunch. I sometimes save a little wood by placing the workbench against one of the big trees.
For the spawners in the rock circles (somewhat like stonehenge), I circle the place and take them out from long range with archery. Usually 2 green ones and one purple one at each site. Something like 75 hit points will take out the green ones; the purple are usually a single shot.
For the crypts, (1) get the dvergr circlet from the trader and wear it for light; (2) use poison potions since this removes the protection from the abomination mask; (3) watch your stamina levels; (4) if you encounter an elite or starred draugr, run like crazy for the exit until you get enough iron to up your protective armor.
If you can get some silver from an early trip to the mountains, use it for some kind of weapon. I do like the stag breaker for inside the crypts ( I use it BEFORE I open that last bit of muddy stuff leading into a room--usually kills everything that might be waiting for me). Silver does terrific damage to undead of all types. Love my silver sword for that reason alone.
