Penalty for building big
It is quite frustrating that as we progress in the game and have the resources to build bigger houses with bigger windows, we get the "bed is too exposed." We shouldn't be forced to choose from either small windows or putting our beds in a closet to appease a ridiculous constraint. Either give us windows (as in glass), or tweak the bed requirements so we can place a bed next to a large window. After hundreds of hours of fighting, exploring, crafting and gathering (and dying), we have earned a bedroom with a view!

There are ways to finesse the system without putting things in obvious cupboards if you look up exactly what it's scanning for and where, but there are already glass windows. They gave us those ages back.

Doh! really? Do they solve the bed is exposed? Obviously I took a break from Valheim. 8-)

This post covers the science of it: https://old.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/m9g0fe/explaining_when_a_workbench_is_exposed_or_not

Note that the rays start a little way outside the item so it can miss walls if they're too close as well as too far away. There's really a lot of wiggle room though, and alignment is key.

I wouldn't call those things glass windows, more like glass blocks. They let the light in, but you can't really see out of them. But the iron cage pieces work.

I always prefer wide open rooms with nice views too, but you still have to shove the bed in a dark corner. And eventually the bats will have something to say about the lack of window coverings.

Thanks for the link. The explanation confirms my assessment of "ridiculous constraint." That the devs chose "face eight" (or 3/4 of a full wall) seems to be the culprit. By choosing this height for the horizontal "beams", they locked in that half walls (that give us a nice viewing window) will not register meeting the requirement. I always line my windows with beams which raises the window height higher than a standard half wall, but not high enough. Silly! lower the horizontal beams until half walls register and count. I've noticed the exact same problem with fires. Half walls give fires issues even though in real life a half wall (with a roof) would give great shelter to a campfire.

But on the plus side 'all' you have to do is work out the exact angles it's checking and add a couple of strategic upright posts. 99% of all that open window doesn't matter at all for exposure.

Yes, it does help knowing the rule behind the silliness of the effect. = )
Speaking of silly:

I built my home back in the 1980s while working at a sawmill. It is all open beam with cathedral ceilings like the picture above. The load bearing in Valheim is not even close to how it works in rl. I had Valheim+ mod a couple of years ago. I was hoping things like this had been worked out by now. : /

It's rather hard to emulate real life load bearing well in games. Let me rephrase, it's hard to do without overloading the system with complex calculation that bring relatively little for a lot of resources.
Yes it is unrealistic or quasi-realistic but thanks to that the game is more available to people with antediluvian systems (like mine), and in general the performance is good. so it's a compromise, we get a practical system; sacrifice realism to a degree to get performence.
It's basically like that in every game that deals with stress tensors. Even in a game dedicated to that as its core mechanic, like polybridge, the system for integrity is simplified.
I get the irritation, i really do. Look on the bright side tho. You can exploit it :> and on occasion you can get a few laughs for certain silly outcomes ;) Oh and... it's still less abhorrent imo in valheim then in a game like 7d2d so it could've been worse xD

half wall with 2m wood beam on top works

Currently playing on a 54" TV and i can see out of the windows just fine. But! yeah i know there's a but. BUT! it might have to do with "Motion Blur" and "Depth of Field". i turn those off.

When you defeat a stone golem one of the drops you get is crystal. You can make "glass" windows using it as a building material (placement is a bit tricky). The thickness of the pane is the same thickness as the wooden wall. The crystal windows let light pass through and keep weather, smoke, and bats out.

Contrary to post #4 you can actually see through them. The view is just slightly distorted due to the thickness of the pane.

In this screen shot you can see one of the iron grates I used to keep the wolves and boars in this barn separate.

This screen shot shows the dvergr lantern pole that lights the darkwood gate from the outside of the building.

In this 2nd story bedroom shot you can clearly see the top of the windmill outside the window. (Pro tip - the iron grate also allows you to see through it while blocking smoke, weather, and bats but it doesn't block the fire status as shown here).

Same window same windmill outside. Different view angle.

The only caveat is that you have to be close enough to the crystal window to see through it.

No need to get overly complex or system resource hog about it. Just turn down whatever value they have the structural fail setting set at currently. It is ridiculously sensitive atm. : P

Thanks for the pics! That helps a lot. Windows are definitely new since I played last. I did get some crystals off a stone golem last night and hadn't looked them up yet. Sounds like I need to look up bats as well. : P
