Wolf taming.
Found two 2-star wolves together, led them down a stone circle prefab in the ground, blocked the stairs so they couldn't get out. Dropped some boar meat in it. Lucky!

Nothing. I wait for like 30m, nothing, sitting with my thumb up my arse because I know if you move away from them, they just despawn.
Eventually, I figure I'd get some more wood, try and do something idk. I move to the CLOSEST TREE, come back, they're gone. Evaporated into the ether.

Like, what? How? What do you want me to do to tame wolves? I can't make them eat, they rely on crappy pathfinding to get to food. I've tamed wolves before, these 2 just utterly refused to do what they're supposed to do, and I lost them, because the game despawned them?

Is there going to be a fix on this in the future? It's been like this for a while now, this is by far the luckiest unlucky thing that happened to me in this game, and it feels horrible, taming is just too jank atm. I killed 5 drakes and a golem while desperately kiting the wolves so they don't take damage, and I succeeded, only to get punished.

Aye, that's a sore one. You did great - the game didn't.

Something similar frustrating happened to me a few weeks ago, when I tried to bring home a tamed 2-star boar on my ship.
First try: boar screamed loud and disappeared / died / felt through the ship planks just after entering the ship and sailing 10 meters. No idea what happend, there was nothing around to damage my boar.
Second try: I managed it to bring the next boar to my home island. Soon as it went on land, it got damaged out of nowhere ( no enemy around). And it died right in front of my eyes at my harbour.
Third try should be the last one I ever try. But luckely my boar survived this time to enter my base harbour, still it got hurt, but with a little bit hp left. It was able to heal over time and is now the grandmother of all my boars.

Note: I have tamed already lot of boars when I played 2 years ago.

They have to stop being aware of you to go for the food. They need to be basically idle and frolicking through the area to be more interested in food then trying to shred you up. If you are too close to their field or view or similar, they will still be in yellow alert even if they can't reach you. As soon as they take the first bite though, they won't despawn anymore.

There is also the internet info that wolves can smell you (instead of just hear + see like most other creatures) if you are not wearing the troll armour, but I have no idea if that is true or not.

Wolves are definitely the most annoying and time consuming to tame and breed in my experience. I had four from two I tamed over an entire night and was trying to breed them last night. I defeated Yagluth recently and I swear there are significantly more raids after a boss. I sat around for 3 in game days and no pups. They were all happy/fed and enclosed in a small pen.

Then a blob raid came (of course something that can jump over walls... of course) and killed all four of them before I could kill them all.

I got an entire stack of ooze but lost hours of work. I'm still salty about it and currently building an entire castle in that area for next time I try to breed them.

I had a strange issue taming a 1 star wolf in my current game. I trapped one in a pit late in the night and it didn't calm down enough to eat before morning came. As far as I know the night wolves only despawn if you leave the area so I stayed. The wolf calmed down, started the howling and the head turn animations, but still wouldn't eat. I moved around some but it did not alert. So, I jumped down in the pit. The wolf ignored me. I figured it was bugged but decided to stick it out and see what happened when night came again. When night fell the wolf finally ate and started taming. I stayed until taming was complete. Now I have large packs of wolves roaming around my 2 bases. Only 1 stars but I've never even seen a 2 star.

From the wiki:
"Night time creatures like starred wolves must be initially fed during the night. If it's day time, the player must trap the wolf and wait nearby to prevent it from despawning. It will not eat until night."

Yeah, I had read that, and some other things. That's why I stuck around. What I found odd though was the wolf totally ignoring me.

Enemies enter some escape mode in some conditions, where they ignore the player. I think for the night despawn escape you can still make them aggressive by attacking, but for that "can't attack the player after x time in combat" escape they even ignore being attacked. People used that on the Queen in the speedruns and you get can get when you attack loxen pretty far away with the bow. They can enter escape mode before they even reach you.

Maybe. I pushed it around some by walking against it. I thought of trying a punch but decided I'd just wait.

Same thing happened to me, I stuck around & got a 1 star wolf out of it, had to wait at the base of a Mountain til the following night though. But it does work, you just can't stroll too far away or really do anything, besides level up your sneak & wait.

Also found out the hard way I found my first 2* wolf & trapped it, got about 75% of the way through eating & taming it fully & had a local area blackout. Logged back in & lost the wolf.

Yea taming 2 star wolves became an obsession for me for a while. Seems like the AI is only active at night and they will not eat or gain affinty at all during daytime. And you cannot leave the area or they despawn. Takes like 2-3 day/night cycles. I got really paranoid and made sure they also bred and had pups before I would acutally feel comfortable enough for me to leave the area in order to prevent them despawning. Even after tame.

wolf taming you must sit next to them whole time, not go away, they will not tame and it take 2-5 nights depend on stars
morrokain10587 Oct 23, 2023 @ 5:26pm
Will they still tame AND breed without a "raidable base" present? So i.e less than two crafting tables and things that prevent spawning?

Otherwise, you'd have to be pretty lucky to not get a raid in all of that time.
FireShorts Oct 23, 2023 @ 8:26pm
2 star wolves can be really buggy if you leave the area at any time before they are able to mate and produce pups. They'll despawn if you go too far away so you have to prepare ahead of time by having enough food on hand to stay until they mate. When the pups grow up they will just be regular, not buggy 2 stars and you can leave as you wish.

Yes. But you still have to hang around for the taming & breeding process.
