item crafting alpha sorting
Hey devs,

When using a crafting station, why does the list of possible items have no Sort function at all? Why is the list not in alphabetical order, or in some other order that would make sense? I assumed this would be fixed years ago, and it still hasn't made it onto someone's to-do list.

Thanks.

Things that can be crafted with what is in your inventory sort to the top of the crafting list. Since your inventory is limited only a few things will pop to the top. If you are using a mod that lets you craft from chests you'll experience the problem you are mentioning. Yet another reason that mods are not supported.

They are sorted by item categories. 1h clubs are together in a list, 1h swords etc., since people will likely mostly stick to one weapon type for skill reasons. Armours are sorted together with the same tier, since people will likely craft all of them together. Helmets are in their own list, since they they are also interesting for light armours users. Alphabetical really does not sound useful, since then you would need to remember all item names. Ancient bark spears would be above bronze and bronze would be above fang. Not all items are named "iron" or "silver". The way it is now I only have to scroll to my sword list and look there.

The sorting within those sublist seem super random though. Sometimes it looks like top down by tier, down top by tier or alphabetical. I don't know what the sorting is there. They might be sorted by internal names and not display names.

No mod involved here. If you have an empty inventory, the crafting station will show all recipes that you have learned. They will be greyed out. With a mod, all recipes at the crafting station will be displayed. (This is not my issue.) With items in the inventory, available recipes are active at the top; this behavior is fine. There should be an alphabetical sort option and it should be the default option, since that's how most people naturally think when they are looking for something in a list.

If the developers were interested in craftsmanship and delivering functionality that is fully formed rather than half-finished, perhaps there'd be no need for mods at all?

Sure, sure, it's a small team and perhaps their development strategy is to rough-draft all the features first and then file down and burnish them later - seen that before - but... players may lose patience with this and use mods that mitigate the half-finished stuff and the developers may lose "steam" and motivation years later and never get round to the filing down and burnishing. So players will use mods to get the game that THEY want to play rather than the developer's drawn-out and delayed "vision".

Well, I can agree with the "players lose patience" part. However when it comes to mods, asking the devs to do more than they already do is like putting handcuffs and leg irons on a group of people already staggering slowly toward the finish line.

The game is still EA. I suspect that mod support will be added when its finished or nearly so. Until then you'll have to be patient and remember that each update will break mods precisely because they aren't supported.

A search function in the crafting menu would be a tremendous help and a vast improvement.

Those always feel like a crutch when devs bloated menus in the first place. It is imo much better if you have some overview what is available and can consciously choose from it.

At my old age where I struggle to remember stuff I need all the help I can get. Being able to search menus would make the crafting menu way better and usable.

In a way. A lot of players use a controller, so that's a consideration. Sorting by alpha would allow recipes to be looked up more quickly than typing in a search box (for a player with a controller), and it would not introduce a new GUI element.
