You don't just die from being in the ocean though. You only lose stamina when actively swimming, so people can come back and pick you up.
Since this was a disconnect, and not part of the game mechanics I think it would be fair for you to consider world hopping to replenish your stamina, if you have a world with stamina potions you might consider grabbing a stack. You can then swim towards shore, take a stamina potion... swim some more till you are almost out of stamina. Log off, re-log on another world... wait for stamina to replenish... repeat.
The only suggestions that do work under any circumstances are logging into another world to recover stamina. Or have a friend pick you up. But both are painfully slow though.
It's just a player hosted server, not paid hosting. It's my friend's world. But yeah everything seems painfully slow and I don't have access to stamina pots yet (we plan to just build the Karve first since we're just post Eiktyr stage, so no need for pots), and let's say that I do die while on a trip, perhaps I'll just ask my friends to pick up my stuff lol.
I mean, we'll think of something, but at least we know.
