I liked the early Valheim game because of the low fantasy aspect.
Now the game is turning into a typical fantasy rpg. Based on road maps and Dev sneak peeks on future content, the game is no longer playable for me. I'm just not interested in more occult and magic using gameplay. So for that reason I'm not playing Valheim anymore.

The introduction of magic was really stupid. Luckily you can still stick to real weapons. Hopefully they don't make magic required for the last 2 biomes.

Your choice. The devs all ready have your money. You do realize that the devs are staying very close to Norse mythology right? Wizards are mentioned in Lokasenna (part of the poetic edda). Galdr was witchcraft, sorcery, and the magic arts. Seiðr was spirit journeys, magical healing, and divination.

You've even been using magic this entire time without realizing it. Ever since you used your first minor healing or stamina mead, summoned your first boss, or used your first forsaken power.

It can all be found in some part of Norse legend or as part of some Norse paganism.

I can understand how you feel somewhat. Magic is part of Norse mythology. So for it to be included in Valheim is natural. I just think that some of the type of magic being added is well outside Norse Mythology. But then again the whole premise of Valheim, a 10th world, is outside of Norse beliefs. Them ain't Valkyrjur that drop you at your spawn point. And if Huginn is as annoying in real life as he is in the game, totally get why Odin sends him out to travel Midgard. The All-Father probably just wanted some peace and quiet.

So my approach to Valheim isn't one expecting adherence to what little we know about Norse Mythology and Beliefs, but more like Marvel's approach - very, very loose for mass appeal.

Do hope that you find a game to your liking. I know there are a few RPG's that stick close to reality in medieval times. Good luck.

Actually it is. If you zoom in during the opening screen you can see its a woman wearing a raven suit or some blend of humanoid woman and giant raven.

You are brought to Valheim at the behest of Odin. Odin is, amongst other things, god of magic.

So what's the point of you telling everyone this? It seems like 99% of everything we do in life. "We all stop playing/doing XYZ because of personal reasons." Okay, so what? You had your hundreds of hours of Valheim. You got your money's worth. Anything else? Anything new to add? No? Sooo..........?

I used to road bike 40-75km's per day 4-5 days a week. These days, I ride about 20km's a day 2-3 days a week. Does everyone need to know? Do I really need to announce this? Give me a break. The only person who cares, who really cares, is you.

Now this sort of problem is where modding excels. Use ones that increase the range of weapons and armor, refuse the siren call of sorcery and face down everything with simple cold steel.

But you were the glue holding this whole thing together! What are the devs supposed to do without your priceless insight? what are WE all supposed to do now? you're being very selfish.

Interesting thread. I like that some kind of Magic is possible but I do agree with the OP that what we've got is a tad too High Fantasy for the setting.

To my learned colleagues that point out their is Magic in Nordic saga etc I agree but generally the Wizard is always a support character to the Hero as a common denominator or as the Villein to the piece (See the Ring Cycle for details! No Not the opera...)

The approach Uncle Zath woulda done was us "Forge Magic" a la Wayand smith or similar for a long while when I first saw that delightful bit of eye candy the Draugr Fang I thought that was the way they were going as that's clearly a Glowing "Magic" weapon ditto portals etc But no High Fantasy it is. :(

I expect theres Mod for this as there is for anything else they missed off. Any suggestions dm me as wouldn't want to side track an otherwise excellent thread.

The way you are framing your post is "if devs follow-up with this particular change, I will stop playing". Sure. Write a negative review on the store page about your dissatisfaction regarding the way the game is headed. No active player will care.

The developers aren't going to become conservative/have their minds changed about the development process to keep a fractional minority of their player base. Especially when they can potentially pull in new, paying, players who are interested in magic.

Additionally, you've already paid for the product. Iron Gate won't lose anything from you quitting.

I wouldn't call this high fantasy magic... ...but maybe it is. It's just another type of range combat to explore if you are tired of the old melee or bow builds. Great if you're playing coop - to get some diverse and complementary builds, probably skippable if you're uninterested.

I thought it might not fit into the viking theme all that much, but it's late game content and it provides a bit more flavour and fun to the game. I think it works well enough in the game and the setting. As far as mechanics go, it still feels fairly simplistic, in a good way.

The Mistlands offers a juncture. You can continue to press ahead with combat skills with carapace armor and the various slash and pierce weapons offered by the black forge or you can (nearly) start over and develop blood and elemental magic skills with eitr set and the various staffs. Many players choose to do hybrid of both and that presents some interesting mixtures when it comes to nutrition choices. There is no one way to play Valheim. In fact, this is one reason some of us have amassed thousands of hours in the game since we may want to develop a character with spear skills, another with knife and stealth skills and so on. From what we've seen in the Ashlands preview, we will even be given new combat opportunities with siege weapons and who knows what the mysterious "queen drop" will be used for when we venture to that new biome.

Besides the game being pretty high fantasy aspect from the beginning, the magic weapons are just weird at the point of the game where they are introduced. Otherwise I'm loving it

OK fair enough. Its such a departure from the source material is what I was driving at. I have read a fair bit on Norse Myths though not a supra expert but no staff of fireballs is coming to mind...

As ranged combat option yeah I can see that, it certainly true that no "Spells/Chants/Rituals/casting of Runes" is going on so I withdraw the High fantasy magic comment.

But it sure aint anything I can identify with either.
