Stone towers aren't troll proof? Or at least troll resistant?
Okay, so: When I find an intact tower (the one with stairs all the way to the battlements on top, or where such can be built) I've been marking it as a "Refuge Tower." The idea being, if I run into an angry troll, I could run to one of these towers, climb up to the battlements, and safely fill said troll full of arrows.
First time I tried this, I was halfway up the stairs when the troll started bashing the tower. And pretty much smashed it to pieces, and me along with it. Damaged me right through the wall!
Haven't been back to do a damage assessment, as this was a LONG way from the starting point, and another troll had just destroyed my initial base on that island, and my bed along with it. (Seriously, the area around The Elder's summoning point seems to be absolutely crawling with trolls.)
Is this a glitch? I can understand taking some damage through a wooden wall (although IMHO it should protect you until it is destroyed.) But stone isn't safe enough to protect from even a few hits from a troll club?

Nope. Trolls are very strong, and ones wielding a log even stronger. Assume that nothing but simply avoiding the attack entirely will keep you safe.

A full repaired stone building or tower can take about three or four Troll blows before breeches occur. A couple more and it'll come down.

Sadly this is why Earthen rampart walls rule the defensive roost at present. That and trenches.

Trolls can't walk over a moat, dry or wet. (Hint: they can't walk across a single core wood beam used as a bridge either) If you dig one far enough away from the tower, the log wielding trolls can't reach it. During the Viking age logs were used by groups of men as battering rams to breach stone walls and iron reinforced gates. It makes sense that a creature that is strong enough to wield a log as a weapon could use it as a battering ram to breach stone walls.

SO appropriate that you brought that up. In LotR during the siege of Minas Tirith, the Orcs brought up a huge metal headed battering ram. It was named Grond, after Morgoth's hammer that he wielded (rather unsuccessfully) during the second battle of the War of the Jewels. And "spells of ruin were laid upon it."
In the movie, Gandalf is rallying the guards as the gate is about to be breached. "You are soldiers of Gondor! Whatever comes through that gate, you will stand your ground!!"
Then the gate falls, and there are armored trolls with huge spiked maces. O_O
And then Sir Ian MacKellan, in a brilliant bit of acting, manages to say a crap-ton in just his facial expressions. "Me and my big mouth! WTF was I thinking?? Oh, well-no backing out now."

AhI The towers might be in as bad shape as the abandoned wooden buildings. That would explain it, if the walls didn't have their full HP to start with.

The stone towers are something of a trap, especially since you don't get the ability to repair them until the next biome. If you want a troll shelter in the black forest, look for those above ground crypts with the sheltered entrances. They are indestructible, and at worst you can go inside. But remember that log trolls do area damage, like your stagbreaker.

Usually I do dig a trench around my base, lead them back there and shoot them. If I want to hunt trolls and don't have a base nearby I'll dig around a 3x3 floor (or 6x6m) minimum area and do the same thing. Anything smaller than that and you'll be in range of the log. Rocks you have to dodge but they're easy to predict.

Plus the game mechanics just don't really account for cover in melee. Creatures have attack animations and anything within the arc of that takes damage, obstructions do not interrupt this. The stone towers are too physically narrow to protect you.

Log trolls have a 10m reach, you aren't going to hide from them in any ruined building in Black Forest.

If you don't want to deal with trolls I suggest popping Eikthyr power and running away. They won't be able to keep up if even if your run / jump skills are low.

I like to find a Troll Cave, kill the occupant and build a basic shelter in it via "Build Restriction Tweaks" https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/1606

I can also build my own basement out in the wilds by using this mod, which places a ladder in a little hole in the ground which you enter as if it was a dungeon. You can add a basement into a basement up to 5 times, it says. I haven't done that yet as one basement suffices for a little outpost. I've used various versions of this mod and I often build a basement next to a ruined tower. I pretend it leads to the tower's old basement. 🙂 https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/sbtoonz/Basements/

They are indeed predamaged. If you think trolls are bad just wait until you reach the plains and have to deal with some of the things that exist there. You'll wonder why you thought trolls were hard.

Dig a deep moat far enough out from the area you intend to build in, and then you're safe from trolls and practically anything else up to the plains. Then, build your base up, up and up. That way you can attack from high with arrows.

They'll even excitedly wreck your buildings after being raised domestic and tame!

The clue in this post is that he can climb the stairs. Those are skeleton buildings and if looked at with your hammer enabled you will see they are about the same strength as cheezie cloth. On the other hand grey dwarf buildings are pretty sound to start with. They are good to use as shelter while roaming, exploring as you can fit a portal in them, put your workbench up on the little platform, destroy their chest and put in your own but they are not troll proof. Will take quite a few hits though. What they are good for is LoS and annoying trolls though I have just hunkered down in them and the troll finally wandered away. Skele buildings are worthless for shelter unless you carry mats for stonecutter with you on your travels.

The real weakness of the skelly towers is the holes, because that means the troll can still see you and take the swing.
Buckus May 23, 2023 @ 9:29pm
always elevate the ground before placing your build. Further ensure that Troll reach cant touch your base by placing two 4' horizontal beams butt to butt...that is their swing range.
