Door is on the lower right, gate parellel to the back wall facing the bed, fire to the left, work bench and bed on top. Add a shelf with a box above the workbench if you feel the need to store stuff here.
But your tiny shack can attract raids. Remember the rule of three, and you've got four there. You don't need to sleep there if you already have a portal. Just a portal, workbench and storage would work.
If you want a mini base and put it up in a tree that might work, but then you'd have to figure out where to put the fire. Once you get some iron going you'd have access to stone though.
Land and kill everything. Use the rock to enlarge the beach head with the hoe and then I make a pier into the water. Raise and flatten the end of the pier until you can put a WB and a Portal with a couple chests. Mobs can't climb into your little raised base and no raids. And make a nice place to park your boat where it will be left alone on the water-side of your base.
If you're talking about wolves, they don't need a base, only plains or mountain biomes, even if it's just a tiny spit of an island in the middle of the water.
But for base raids, three base items close enough to each other will allow them to trigger, which are crafting stations, beds, portals, wards, fires and torches.
Good point about the bed / fire, if I'm dropping a portal I don't really need anything else besides the workbench.
Also, I'm not planning on using this base long enough for base raids to be relevant. It's just a strikepoint to kill Bonemass. Which I achieved; healing and mana potions are really helpful, as is just standing back and waiting for him to swipe and miss, then charging in and triple slugging him while he's throwing armpit cheese and barfing poison.
Time to head into wolf land!
