Absolutely love the game so...
... please help me find another one like it. If it exists.

Over 1200 hours now and I really and truly love the game.

Things I really enjoy about it.

1. You start with nothing. Your weak and easy to kill. However slowly you start finding stuff to help you fight and survive better and longer.

2. Its an open world concept but you must move forward to truly progress. It's just that you can take forever doing it or go full ham.

3. The combat system. I agree it is easy to master but I have multiple ways of dealing damage and the abundance of different weapon types offer good variety as well.

4. Building. You can go huge and great or small and manageable. Speaking of which some of the things the community has built is absolutely amazing.

5. Not forced to upgrade armor and weapons if you choose not too. Doing so obviously helps but refusing to allows for more skillful and careful play.

6. The Viking theme. As someone who loves the Fantasy genre a viking fits right in.

So what I am asking is using the above as a guideline can anyone recommend a game to me that is similar in design.

Please note I do not like 1st person shooter types like Fallout. I have tried it multiple times and I simply don't enjoy it. In addition I have tried both Oblivion and Skyrim and for whatever reason I didn't enjoy them either. I think they are too open world for me. See note 2.
Another note is I play on an older pc so the game can't be too new or I can't play it.

Thank you.

Another I might suggest is Vintage Story. It's basically hard minecraft with a midieval lovecraftian horror theme. Lots of building, survival, some combat, some rpg elements. Very underrated imo
I can vouch for this game too.

How has no one mentioned ARK yet? lol. Personally I loved it. It is first person, and does have guns, but I found it very not like FPS games. I agree with you that Fallout isn't that great, and I don't care at all for FPS games either, but ARK was very good.

Also, modded Minecraft is amazing for some of the things you mentioned. Especially a mod like Twilight Forest. Stuff like Tinkers Construct makes weapon REALLY fun and interesting and customizable.

I'm a bit confused that you found Skyrim MORE open than Valheim. Skyrim has questlines that cause you to know exactly what you're "supposed" to do next. Valheim basically just throws you in, and hope you survive. Even the quest aspects were just general goals, and you kinda had to figure it out yourself.

Kenshi. You get nothing you don't earn... either through wits, or strength.

Have you tried this game with mods? There are tons of superb changes out there. They make every stage of the game so much fuller content-wise. Not to mention plenty of QOL mods out there. As to Conan, for me, it's a complete no-go after Valheim. It's super chaotic and full of so many unnecessary, poorly designed ideas.
When it comes to suggesting something, the top 2 survival/building games out there are ARK and Valheim imo, so try Valheim. It has mods, too, even better so: on Steam already.

Kenshi.

I don´t know why so many people love this game. Played it for two hours and it was one of the worst gaming experiences of my life. After trying to figure out what to do and how, then while I still didn´t know what the game, with horrible graphics, wanted from me, no items lying around, nothing..and, a mob of like 14 pixel guys was fighting each other, then started chasing me. I died with no clothes and no weapon, naked after so much time in game. Nothing made any sense.

Satisfactory. It's a giant factory game, true, but it's not too different.

Satisfies the "start with nothing" and "gigantic open world" and "I could build here, and wow what I just built is amazing", but it's just as engaging as Valheim.

(I know, no Vikings, and it's a factory game, but it's so gooood)

Also published by Coffee Stain but different teams.

oh this game, I didn´t like it at all - the enemies 1 year ago (hopefully better now) had the AI of a magnet - and it was extremely time consuming to build even basics. The very positive reviews "prove" me wrong - as a Valheim lover I comment just to share my impression

is it playable? Maybe you can tell how it plays compared to Valheim? recent reviews sound quite upset, but I had it on my wishlist so your opinion would help, as it is on sale right now

Space Engineers (need mods for good npc's to fight), Empyrion, 7 Days to Die, Subnautica, Medieval Dynasty, V Rising, Conan Exiles, even No Man's Sky. Lots of fun builder/survival games out there.

Core keeper is really good, if the top view doesnt bother you.
It doesnt require a big PC, and can be played with teamates

I tried the new demo of Aska last night and thought it was fun enough to at least keep following. There are obvious similarities with Valheim but it doesn't feel at all like a clone.

have you tried "expedition viking"? Its a party-strategy game like baldurs gate / pathfinder but its viking themed, you start with little and either craft or loot more stuff, and you build up your home town (but not open world building) .... magic is present but toned down kind of like darklands where prayer or religious stuff has some real world effects but isn't all fireball and I win buttons. Its one of the best viking games going.

On the other side, this game is a lot like no mans sky... but that is space themed and a little bit of a shooter (combat is ranged instead of melee, mostly). But it has open world, building, survival, start with nothing and grow in power, Its basically everything you asked for except vikings and possibly the combat depending on what you really wanted there. NMS is weird in that its difficulty even on hardest settings is inverted... its brutal for a short time, then gets easier and easier until combat and survival on hostile worlds is easy, and eventually, trivial. One issue is that your base isn't as important as it is here, its fun to make them but not required to play (its required IMHO for valheim).
