in order for the server to work, the host needs to turn it on, (start server button,) which will enable it to be played online.
then for crossplay, just the button for that.
the issue is that we are supposed to be able to join friend servers with just those selections set, but for some reason it doesn't fully work.
the final way to make this work is to set it as a community server if the above doesn't work or allow you entry, a community server is one that is visible in the community server list, and setting the server as one usually makes it work to allow people to join.
for some reason just trying to join a non community server of your friends doesn't always work.
