Edit: I got to ask, that lake we see to the right of your screen shot? there is a wall covering said lake too right?
Yeah, the wall extends down into the water there, and there's workbenches covering everywhere that has land on that side. There's one inside the building on the right hand side of the picture, that covered area behind the building is a workbench to cover the boar pen, there's one on the shore of the water and another one on a little spit of land in the water.
I double checked there was nowhere were you could walk, even with the water low, that wasn't covered by the workbenches. Also, this happened in the space of like 10 seconds. If anything did spawn on that side I would have seen it, because I was up on that side of the roof collecting honey.
This is what I'd just done; Docked the boat, pulled the tin into the building, walked outside around the right hand side of the building to throw food to the boars, walked over to the smithy around the back of the building to put wood in the charcoal oven, walked out the front doors and turned left to go up to the roof. All within the space of about a minute. There were no sounds of greylings, there were none on the land I could see from where I was standing (that's the docks I'm working on), there were none around the back.
But in the space of me walking up to the roof and pressing E on the two hives I heard it making sound and attacking the wall. If it came from anywhere but right near by it'd have had to have walked past me to get to that spot, or a really long way around the far left wall and to the front doors in the time it took me to walk through the building and out again.
1. Maybe you missed a spot. I know that spot is covered, but maybe the grey spawned further out and managed to stay quiet until it got closer. (Most often the right answer, not saying it's true here.)
2. Loading error. Somehow the grey spawned before a workbench went active, also more likely in a larger area.
3. Some other kind of bug. Just had a patch this morning, so who knows if that changed anything relevant.
I've had a grey shaman spawn in a completely covered base before, though that only happened once. Just a random glitch I suppose. The real test is if it keeps happening.
My base is on a black forest offshore island and all available land is 100% covered in workbench radius, even the random rocks offshore so even storm ebbs should be covered. My build is on stilts, and I have height factored in (I ensure I have coverage at both ground level and elevated floor level). I believe it works as I never have spawns under normal circumstances.
However, twice now I have encountered this:
1. I had a "foul smell from the swamp" raid.
2. I waited out the raid with no activity. I saw nothing spawn and nothing attacked during the timer.
3. A couple of minutes after the raid ended, I suddenly heard something attacking a ground level workbench. Both times, it was a single, normal skeleton, and it was the same workbench both times.
This hasn't happened every raid (and I've been through several, I'm not killing Bonemass until I find Moder, and my seed is being stingy on that - I've found two Yagluth altars already while trying to find Moder), but both times I had the skelly appear it was after the raid. Presumably it spawns remotely during, and just takes forever to find something to attack? But I can't figure where it comes from, or why it's a lone skelly, when nothing spawns normally.
No idea if it's related to OP issue, but similar outcome.
Anyone know if skeletons require less space to spawn than greydwarfs and draugr? Perhaps I have a tiny sliver of spawn space I've missed covering that is only big enough for a skelly. I might need to kill Bonemass sooner rather than later and see if they spawn more frequently once they can do so any nighttime and not just in raids.

I've had some people try to tell me that work benches don't suppress deer and bird spawns because they can't do any damage but 99.9% of the time the workbenches do suppress deer and bird spawns. These 2 screen shots represent 2 of the 3 total times its ever happened to me.
That said, I have never had an enemy that can do damage spawn, inside work bench radius, even during a raid unless I had a bit of the interior not covered.
Things can spawn outside work bench coverage but they don't spawn outside render distance. This can cause a gap since the work benches that are outside of render distance don't provide their usual coverage. Moving around so that work benches come into and out of render distance could cause something to spawn outside work bench range but still inside render distance that then approaches.
Another possibility is that its a left over from a previous raid that got stuck in the geometry (I have had greylings attention gotten by moving greydwarves from a "The Forest is Moving event" that decided to join the fun and also from being attracted to necks and boars from "Eikthyr rallies the creatures of the forest") but finally managed to clip out of the geometry and escape the same way that adult boars can clip into the geometry of their enclosure and then escape if you enter and exit render distance.

Which can also happen to naturally spawning creatures that spawn outside work bench range but inside render distance and in trying to path to you they get stuck in the geometry because your movements caused them to enter and exit render distance.
These are situations that occur when your base is overly large. In my case the bases were between 25x25 tiles and 30x30 tiles or more.
Every proc gen game I have ever played has geometry issues with items that spawn (including Valheim) that no amount of bug fixes manages to repair.
Just a few replies (sorry for snipping):
With regard to 1&2 that was kind of my assumption it was one of those two at first, that's why I didn't want to jump straight to calling this a bug. But to give a bit of context, I've done a fair few bases in previous saves of this size or bigger. So I'm kind of used to checking that every square inch is covered by the work bench. That area specifically has been covered by work benches for about 4 hours of gameplay, maybe more.
With regards to 3, that's defo a possibility, I just noticed this happening a lot lately but this is the first time it happened where I couldn't easily chalk it up to me borking up.
I think them spawning because they're out of render distance may be a possibility. I've been spending a lot of time running back and forth into the base to collect resources since I got it all covered and walled off, and I had literally just sailed back into the base when this incident happened. It's quite possible that it happened with a combination of (1) from Zep's post, where it spawned like that and snuck closer and I just missed it.
I've noticed a lot of animals spawning in this base still, at least 2 different spots with deer, and the only real difference between this one and previous bases is that I haven't altered the ground in this base where they spawn (yet). The work flow for this one has been a bit different to my other bases though; I generally look for a flat-ish area and work with that, but this time I wanted to heavily modify the terrain. Normally I'd just give the whole base a going over to smooth it out, this time I started out by removing 2 large hills and raising land, so I'm still in that process where the deer are spawning.
Maybe that has something to do with it?
I've actually had that one in the past. Weirdly enough on this playthrough I've literally only had 2 raids. One just before Eikthyr in the little hut I put down near spawn, and then one Greydwarf raid when I first put down the main building in this spot.
Apart from those I've not had either, so I don't think it is related. But I've definitely seen that bug before. It's weird when it does happen though.
That's interesting. I'm going to keep an eye on that with mine. There's at least 3 spawn points where Greylings would appear here; 2 to the left of where the picture is, and one to the right. They're all covered in workbenches now. But I'll keep an eye out to see if the same ones are spawning, but pushed outside the radius.
Personally I'm not going anywhere near the elder or beyond until raids can be turned off. Not long now!
I'm fine with raids. The only annoying thing with them is that if you build large areas like I do, it's quite possible to have a situation where the raid circle is too far away from the enemies for the timer to tick down.
But they're easy enough to do if you take your time and don't rush through the bosses; Max out your current tier of gear and stockpile resources/food and you should be fine for the next area's raids and enemies.
But I can see how someone would prefer to have a more chill experience.
Oh that's nice. It always used to be the Troll raids that caused those issues for me because I'd be kiting them and didn't want them in and about my farms.
I think it'd be nice if there was some sort of spawn limit on the enemies, unless they've already implemented that. I know I used to end up fighting quite a few trolls when those things would happen. Most of the other raids weren't too bad, I could generally sit on the walls inside the circle if need be.
