Crafting station upgrades "Needing more space"
Despite there being more than enough.

As I understand upgrades have rays towards the workbench and other upgrades block those rays and thus block placement. So I'd guess placing the workbench more to the center of the room and upgrades around it will create fewer blockages.

Crafting station upgrades have a deceptively large area and have to be spaced far apart. The only reason I can think of is to encourage players to expand their base, as they will need more space for all of the required upgrades.

A workaround is to dig underneath the base and put them below the floorboards.

I assume all your other cooking stuff is on the floor beneath? Those gold sparkly lines have to come at the cauldron from different angles, and going up should help, but I have no idea what the rest of your setup looks like. I've also seen that crafting stations don't like sharing the same floor square even if they look like they should fit. You probably have something right below it that is conflicting.

Workstation improvement hitboxes are definitely really stupid. Especially when it's the only mechanic the designers can imagine to upgrade your recipes.

Oh wait no, they added the *black* forge in addition to the simple forge, that was groundbreaking.

I wish they would come up with something a bit more creative to upgrade your workstations.

I like the decorative upgrades in principle, just wish you could see the hitboxes while placing. Don't make this a blindfold party game.

The smaller improvements can often be placed on a shelf above the work station. You can also spread the improvements around. They just have to be in range of the work station they modify and you only need access to the work station, not any of the improvements, to craft and upgrade gear.

You can always put the little floorboad on a wall and "build" the extension of any crafting station on that. Just like how some players build their wall of chests.
Advantage of that is that you're able to build 2 extentions at the space of one floor tile.

still need to double the range on some (most?) items (like spice rack) that are just a pain to place. getting the improvements to look nice on such short chains to their parent is much harder than it should be.

I agree with this so much. I like to blend functionality with form but I'm seriously considering putting my current setup under the floor because of how fussy the spacing is. I love the look of some of the upgrades, some of them make awesome decoration. . . but goodness they should be able to sit right next to each other.

it IS irritating, and forces your workshop to be awkward.

They don't take up as much space as it seems, they just need to "see" the workstation, a clear line of sight to the station, not blocked by another upgrade. It is wonky as all hell, I'd prefer proximity over visibility.

I've noticed that some objects don't like being placed above others but can't find any logical way to explain it. I've also placed some things outside meaning other side of the wall.

it cant be true line of sight, as they work fine buried, which is why my current 'tiny house' has going on. Whatever the logic is, needs work.

It's not line of sight. I've placed upgrades outside and on the roof of small abodes. It's proximity.
It's based on distance and yes, it is annoying. The Forge upgrades in particular sometimes require obscene closeness to the forge itself as well as enough space around them to basically build another room (as in, can't be placed close to another upgrade). Bellows for example is just stupid.
