Use old character for latest game update?
Haven't played in about 1.5 years. At that time I did just about everything in the game. Any problems with using that character now in a new world?

While I understand your desire to go back to an already built land, if you haven't played in that long, just start a new game as they've added a lot to the game since you've played last.

They didn't just make late game biomes, they added stuff all along your journey from the start.

To answer your question though, if you've explored a lot of the world, then a lot of the new stuff won't be in the game as it won't spawn certain things in areas that you've already explored.

Edit -
I see now you don't want to play in your old world, just bring your fully upgraded gear dude to a new one.

I hadn't played since before the hearth and home update. I had no issue using my original character in a newly created world.

I believe OP was only asking about using an old character not an old world. Using old character is fine, have never had any issues personally. I started using my most skilled character to go back and work on my other worlds that I haven't defeated all the bosses yet.

Yes, re-using your old character should work no problem (make backup anyway).
But you all do know you can use your old world just fine, too?!
It's just that by default all the already explored areas won't be updated (maybe tiny stuff only)[1].
But every newly explored area will be generated with the up-to-date world-gen-algorithm of your current game version (= with all the new stuff).

And even updating already explored areas (to differing degrees) is no problem with Upgrade World[valheim.thunderstore.io] :steamhappy:

[1] You'll miss theses items/objects/locations (or just some of them):
Spoiler warning:
  • Onion seeds in mountain chests.
  • Tar pits in plains.
  • Frosted Caves in mountains.
  • complete Mistlands overhaul (which isn't necessarily a bad thing - I wish I hadn't updated the few Mistland ares I had already discovered).

May have mist some stuff but that ^^ should be the bulk of it.

You can do it, though if you haven't played since before Hearth and Home, be aware of some changes to how food works, especially in relation to blocking and armor. Food boosts HP, and armor and blocking are also calculated using HP. Better food, means better defense all around. Remember to upgrade your cauldron. Be on the lookout for the new plant(s) in each biome. (Mistlands and plains have two.)

If it's been after H&H the updates are more about the world than the character so go explore and enjoy!

Go for it!

One of the nice things about this game is the 'persistence' of your characters across the infinite number of worlds you can create.

Some would argue, even going in nekkid, an existing character with extremely high skills will be a bit OP, but at least players have that option.

None of the changes since you have last played are hard to grasp mechanically (this from a recently returned after a long break player) and as @ZepTepi wrote many of them will also make themselves known to you as you explore (unless you are a read all the change notes since you last played type of person).

My vote - skip the change notes and just play the game and all will be made known.

The main problem is you'll touch something and get spammed with a thousand recipes.
