Grey Dwarf Spawners
So I set up a greydwarf farm yesterday and works great but had a question. Trying to keep bats out of the build but if I put a roof over the top of the build the spawn stops.

So before I go wasting a good number of iron will iron grates also stop the spawn if I close in the roof with them or do they constitute a floor and won't interfere with the spawn like a roof will???

those act as a solid object in terms of light, rain, smoke.... they are the same as a "floor" tile, with a different skin which you can "see through".

So in other words being it's considered a floor it should not stop the greydwarves from spawning in at the spawners right as just don't want to make them all only to find it was a waste of time

I'm not certain of the answer, but I know that "roof" tiles are a specific object type of their own, with the "special ability" of blocking water damage (of any type, not just rain) to the build pieces directly below them. With that in mind, it's entirely possible that they are coded to block spawners, and floor tiles are not.

That being said... it's a greydwarf spawner.
Any greydwarf bigger than a greyling (ie, everything that comes out of a greydwarf nest) drops wood, so resources aren't an issue... Build some wooden floors and see if the spawning stops?

I didn't mean that they are considered floors... I was saying they are solid objects... no holes in them... do not let light or smoke pass through.... solid LIKE a floor piece is solid.

I would definitely just craft one, or whatever, and try it out, before wasting all kinds of iron for a "spawn farm".

I get that; my point was that as far as I'm aware, "roof" tiles are the only non-door/gate building pieces that act any differently from floors, in a game sense; iron grates don't stop rain any more than floor tiles do... so if floor tiles don't block spawners then grates probably don't, either.

I don't have an answer, I was merely suggesting a way to find one.

Iron gates will deactivate the spawner. The minimum required overhead opening is around 2x 2x meters so build accordingly.

You could also watch a YT video on how raids are activated and build accordingly so no raids are triggered at your spawner.

that an idea also as the build has a high roof level so might be tricky to find the exact roof section to leave out but will check on attack spawns and such

As long as you dont have any base structures around you dont have to worry about being interrupted by events, so maybe take them down when you start farming. The only exception is the wolves one but thats mountains and plains only.
