What have you heard that makes you say there's 9?
No. If you have information, present it.
"In the finished version of the game, there will be nine biomes with nine bosses. And then we're also exploring adding mini-bosses and stuff like that," he said. "So yeah, there will be more bosses coming."
4 months later they said that the roadmap is essentially scrapped, and they've said nothing else about it since.
The most recent info we've been told is that there's the Frozen North, the Ashlands, and a potential rework of the Ocean. So 2 new biomes, and more content added to a current one.
Certainly there's a chance that more can come afterwards. There could be a 9th boss coming down the line. But with the original question being "why are people saying only 8?", the reason is that old info is outdated, and current info points at 8 bosses at this time.
Don't forget the boss for the ocean. It might also come in the future.
And maybe that huge tree in the sky becomes the final biome.
From what I can tell the Ocean seems to be the point of contention. There seems to be debate on whether the Ocean biome is "done" ... will be revisited later to add more content (like they did with the mountains and plains) ... and whether or not there will be an Ocean "Boss."
But honestly all I see is speculation. A boss was planned once upon a time ... but since the roadmap has imploded it's anybody's guess.
You can't attack while swimming.
Everything has to be do able solo as it would multiplayer.
You'd have to be on a boat/ship that has enough health to survive the battle while not steering or lure it to ground.
Otherwise it would need an alternative option, like the boss being a large monster you can hop onto from your boat to attack it.
If the devs stick to their original plan of 9 bosses from the fresh to steam early access launch interviews, the 9th boss doesn't necessarily have to be related to the ocean either, it could be Odin himself or something crazy.
But with present information, we have been repetitively told [in interviews] that the ground based biomes will have bosses. So it's a minimum of 8 currently.
The circle isn't final, the altars gets resized and shifted, just like they did when they added the mistlands one.
