why do I have to wait out storms?
New player (July 2023) - Is there a way to skip storms? I'm playing solo, so there isn't anyone else's game that I'd be interfering with.

I had to place my campfire outside my house to make room for the bed and chest. But this means that when it rains, I just have embers and no flames. Which means I can't sleep. Which means I either have to sit there wand wait for the storm to end or wander around outside and be cold/wet/exposed.

Hey Devs, how about a "fitful sleep" option?

Cover the fire with a roof so the rain isn't affecting it.

What suzaku said, when you get the bonfire option, rain cant put that out.

You can also expand your house. I make one large enough to fit my bed, a dozen storage chests, several crafting stations, tables to place food on to look nice, and multiple fire pits.

You're going to be here a while. Live like a king!

You need some kind of roof and sometimes also a windbreak for your fire, but also need to have the smoke vent outside or up high.

Here's an example of how to quickly adapt one of the existing buildings.

With little material you can easily build a chimney which protects the fire from wind and rain but also let's the smoke vent out.

When I build a small shack I always attach a fire pit to it with a roof tile angled away from the wall to let the smoke out. Some half walls as windbreak, a cooking rack and good. On a bigger house I have a fire pit in the center with a hole in the roof and an elevated cap letting the smoke out and no rain in.

You don't need to wait them out, being wet/cold doesn't have much effect outside diminished stamina regen, as for cooking/other things, I am new player as well but setup my cooking pot and stations outside with thatched roofs and an inverted one I can still stand under in the rain & cook but also not choke on the smoke. I think I got lucky though and found a nice spot with frame of house already there that I just filled out

obviously you don't have a boat yet -.....otherwise - you dont "have to" do anything
-when it storms ....go sailing , once you make a boat with the hammer , there is no better time to go sailing

Build Bigger: 4x3 wooden house with pitched roof, workbench, bed, a couple of wooden chests campfire inside. Build a chimney in one corner with an angled roof tile on top to vent smoke and stop the rain coming down the chimney. That's your basic overnight shelter which you can then mark on the map with a house icon. A welcome retreat when you might come back to this area in the future.

Nothing wrong with building large. This is an early start that I did recently. It a collection of 3 historically accurate Viking lodges. The central one has storage, my bed and fire (the smoke hole is on the peak) and a portal. The other end has my cook fire and cauldron, my work bench and forge, and 2 fermenters.

The lodge on the left is a barn. When it gets full of boars. I let half of them into the yard so the ones in side the barn can keep breeding. The yard has 2 garden plots and several bee hives.

The lodge on the right holds my kiln and my smelter and storage for wood, charcoal, ore and ingots. The gate in the stake wall leads to the exterior yard where I have stacks of wood and piles of left over stone from mining copper. Its all surrounded by a dry moat and I have corewood beams for bridges. The base is built in a neck on my start island and I have a dock on each side with a Karve ready to sail, I have a cart by each bridge ready to go with a path smoothed out to reach the boat houses.

I like this idea of barns. Previously I've just had outdoor stone walled pens. I'm now building up a nice little Hen/Chicken/Egg farm at my main base and I think a barn style construction would be rather nice.

I also like the idea of having a slaughter gate :D

when reusing the early game huts that you find, space can be a problem. If you put the fire outside, you can make roof tiles on the outer wall to protect it from rain, and then it won't go out. These work best if you go up away from the wall, that is, like this:

| /
| /
| fire

but I suggest you make a full home from scratch with more space. Even the largest existing homes are not very large, and the best of those are in obnoxious draghr villages which are difficult to clear early game or in the mistlands which are simply not safe for lower characters.
Its possible to do a tiny home; you can bury non-interactive but necessary items for comfort and crafting under the floor and then manage with about a 6x6 or so floor plan. But for a typical single player I highly recommend at the very least a 10x10 floor tile x 2 floors sized home to ensure space for a full kitchen, crafting, storage, comfort, and so on setup.

that aside, find something to do in the rain. Good time to visit lower difficulty areas to gather wood or supplies, or manage your farm, work on your house, cook up extra food, whatever.

Hunt birds during rain because they spend more time on the ground.

yea, everyone tossed in the same idea here. you need to build a chimney or a few in you home. eventually you need and entire cook station i have two.
