... unless you have multiple portals at each hop, allowing you the freedom to decide where you're going on a very granular level.
Oh, my portal at "Harbor" that's linked to "Trees" is down? That's fine, I'll go to my tree farm through "Pigs" instead, and repair it. It's an extra hop, but it's intuitive and very robust... especially if you aim the portals in the direction of travel (ie, rotate the portal that moves you north so that you travel northward to go through it).
So I have Mosfell - Land and then depending on landmass size I create ( mosfell-h ) in the center and each direction on that landmass. north south east west - mosfell-w, mosfell-n
if there is any important areas on that landmass they are also marked: mosfell-tar
i only keep 6 portals at home which are constant and then have another 6 that are variable.
i create them with return-a, return-b, et cetera - i have now started to make them just ra rb rc.... easier
whenever possible i take with me enough to build a Stone Cutter on a boat and then on the new land i find a perfect spot or existing castle and create a Keep on that landmass.
mosfell-keep. then this Keep or Home will have the 4 portals to each N S E W location, so large hub at home with variables and small hubs from there to other locations
It's interesting to see players type showing through, the analytics, the go fast and not be too concerned, and all the somewhere in-betweens. Fun times.
I know, too complicated. Just disregard. One thing about this game is patience and taking the time to build things right while you are one shotting trolls with an upgraded copper knife via backstab.
During the course of a full playthrough, I generally have a 2-3 dozen portals placed throughout the world, and don't wish to try to correctly remember and type portal names, especially over weeks of time, so I make a portal hub and give every portal it's own "twin".
At the portal hub I keep one portal "default", and while I explore, I carry resources to craft a portal. When I find a spot I want to be able to return to, I can drop the portal, hop through, directly to the "default" portal (at the hub), and then place and name a new portal... hop through the default portal to return to the original portal and rename it to match the new one at the hub. Easy as that.
