This isn't a game where you join random worlds. If you want to find others to play with, there's the LFG subforum: https://steamcommunity.com/app/892970/discussions/3/
2. Your (local) world and (local) characters are saved apart from one another. Progress is saved individually. You can log your character onto different worlds (either local or hosted by someone else) and you will retain all your skills/gear.
3. As far as finding people, that can be hit or miss. I've been fortunate that several of my IRL friends also play Valheim.
Steam -> Valheim -> Server -> assign password
My husband's computer next to me in spare bedroom:
Steam -> Valheim -> Join Server -> type in password
and voila! He's in my world.
