why do the scales and trophies fall to the bottom of the ocean? i really wanted my sea serpent trophy!

Are you playing with mods?

The default behavior is that the meat floats, and everything else sinks. The solution is to harvest barnacles from leviathans, make a harpoon, and drag them into shallower water (or on to land).

Alternatively, get their health low enough that you can one-hit them, then fling yourself at them while melee attacking so you can be center-mass when they give up the ghost and drop their loot... preferably while shouting obscenities screaming a war cry.

They will usually pursue you for a while across the oean. I lure them into shallow water, preferably behind a big rock in a benign biome, land, get out, and attack. They have a long "turn mode", and they often get their head stuck behind a boulder in the water. This keeps them from running away when you start to damage them with arrows. In shallow enough water, you can reach the scales and trophy after they die. Also, you can sometimes get an assist from a passing troll or dwarf patrol on the shore.

I've collected a number of trophies and even occasionally a scale by just waiting till point blank range with that last arrow and spamming grab when the corpse pops.

This is mostly to make getting the meat easier since having them floating a way off to the side is the most awkward place to get your boat to, but the trophy is a big grab target so you certainly have a chance to get it before it sinks.

If you want to get the scales and trophy, what you'll need to do is find a serpent, lore it close to the land then use the harpoon to bring it onto land so it can't escape.

or if you're good enough. You time your last bow hit and jump off the boat before the arrow kills the serpent. It's not guaranteed you get all the scales or trophy but it works.

no this is an intended thing the devs introduced.

just google it, the scales and trophies drop to the bottom.

the reason is they made it a reason for using the harpoon you get from the barnacles off of the leviathans.

(And if you do the Sky may fall on you and your first born child may become a Haggis! IE use at own risk not officially approved etc)

Try "Vikings do swim" or the slightly better for my personal taste "Better Diving" Mods. With the latter you will strain to reach ocean depths unless your swim skill is excellent. With the former you can swim anywhere in any direction for as long as you like. (As stamina regains in water when you pause - which I personally don't go for)

the harpoon works great or just kill them in shallow water if you can get them there , sometimes i jump on their head for the last arrow , but i dont get all the scales that way , just a few , ive also tried jumping in the water and punching them but it desnt work great add the epic loot mod and you can go hunt 2 star serpents , cant be harpooned but drop over 20 scales each , 24 meat and 30 scales on my last one

and the scales are kinda useless right now, the shield it makes sucks and thats all they do rn. Really wish theyd expand into some kinda mariner armor or something.

A more reliable (to me at least) method of the "jump in for last hit" method is to actually jump ONTO the serpent's head, which can be stood upon.

Since you're now standing on something, you can throw a spear straight down for the last hit, and when the serpent dies you'll fall into the water fast enough to collect most scales and trophies before they sink. And I believe all spears float, so it will be recovered as well.

Just make sure you have inventory room and weight limit available (keeping in mind you'll also be picking up the serpent meat).
