Is there a way to set up a Free Dedicated Server?
Want to introduce Valheim to some friends (hopefully they'll enjoy), but everyone works at different hours.
Would be great to set up something where anyone, at any time, can join.
I just don't know if it's possible to have free Hosting
:O

Yes, just use another computer and host it from your own home. Just make sure your system meet the system requirements.

Yes, it certainly is possible. It took me a few days to figure out all the instructions, they all seem to make it more confusing than it actually was to set up. After I had it running, I was surprised how easy it actually was. I actually run the server on the same box I play on.
Think this is the video that really helped me: https://youtu.be/upEhacdqMLw

yes, in library, where you see the games list there is a "GAMES" right above the seach bar. there you can choose to show tools. you will see the "valheim dedicated server". install it. the account does not need to have bought Valheim, as I have read. there is a PDF with more instructions in its folder. I would also sugest that you read guides to see how to configure it properlly, as i have not done it myself

Although. Can one get free Hosting? So you don't need to run our own PCs?
Is a bit problem for us in our country because we have constant power cuts,
every single day.
Really difficult to work around . . .

No hosting takes hardware and resources, unless someone is willing to volunteer or do it for an exchange of service(s) you won't find any free hosting, if you don't do it yourself or have someone in the group do it themselves.

That being said there are hosts that charge as little as 5 USD per month, while the average is about 10 USD.

Ah, of course. Makes sense. Really stupid question on my behalf.
Thanks dude

Workable in a pinch but I wouldn't recommend it long term, it means you're putting way more stress on the server than any other player who connects.

Been running it for months without any hiccups so far. My plan was to set it up on another computer. But I decided to try it on my own computer first to figure it all out without setting up another computer. It works well enough that I just left it that way. I plan on moving my office around & will setup the 2nd computer then.

Yeah, all good on that. Our issue is the stupid country we live. Different parts of the country get "Load shedding" every day at different times. If we're lucky, we only get 2 hours knocked off every day during prime time. Otherwise, most days, we get black out 3 - 4 times a day for a minimum of 2 hour sessions, sometimes 4.
Annoying 'cause people in 1st world countries don't believe it's a thing.
All I can say is, don't come to Africa, things ARE different.
Anywho, that was the rant for the day . . .

That sounds like an environment that would have a lot of LAN parties and homebrew gaming networks across city rooftops, which Valheim is very compatible with. One of the nice things about dedicated server apps is they don't insist on networking through Steam or the wider internet if you can arrange a more direct connection.
