If I were to add it in, it would be:
Plains-level tech minimum.
Require a lot of metal on its own (30+)
Use something significantly harder to obtain than coal as fuel (Maybe a new resource refined from Tar)
Take a very long time to melt down anything (1 whole game day at least so you can only sleep cheese like a third of the timer)
Make the Return fractional, and only return materials from level 2 or higher equipment anyway, and only return metal ingots, no linen, chains, leather, etc.
Again, it has to be so irritating to use, it's literally only used to recycle upgraded gear.
lmao suuuuure. The mod is used because it is an easy bin and it is nice to recycle some stuff. There exists portal mods if you want to cheese metal.
Like the game hasn't already a hundred ways to cheese stuff. 🙄🙄🙄
It's used exclusively to cheese portals because when people realize how easy it is to just go mine more materials, they realize it was a dumb mod. Not because there's other portal mods. Unlike portal mods too, this one works on other people's dedicated servers.
So you mine the ore built a smelter, smelt it. Built a workbench and a forge. Upgrade them to built an item that can hold enough metal that this makes any sens. Or transport a shi!load of lvl 1 items moving back and forth a few times. All to avoid the fun of simply driving your boat with a full load of ore for a few minutes. 🤷♂️
That's dedication, they deserve it,
It's not just about that, it's also about "Compressing" the metal too. A Single Iron Cuirass at level 4 is 2 full stacks of iron. So you save 99.9% of the weight and 1 slot by compressing it to a lvl 4 cuirass. You effectively quadruple your ore capacity, so yes, people are doing exactly what you said, but not under your reductionist reasoning.
Why on earth would I use a recycle mod to cheese portals when portal mods exist? If I'm modding anyway, I'm going to do it right.
I use the recycle mod because hitting the wrong button will give me two draugr fang bows instead of upgrading the one I have.
an idea would be to set a portal near mistlands, set up a little perimeter for it and chest to store boat building stuff, so you can just have the sailing home part to worry about, just dismantle boat at home go back to mistlands, put it in chest until you need it to sail back again
