Playing with Controller
I was wondering how peoples experience is playing with a controller on Valheim? I was going to be doing a new play through that I can just do from my couch when I want to lounge and play, doing that I was going to have to use a controller. Is it a pretty decent experience or is it poor?

All I use (for the most part) is controller, and I don't have any problems. If you're coming from KBM, your opinion might be different, but it is definitely playable. Building can be a bit finicky, and I'm sure aiming at running targets with the bow is not as accurate, but it's great for maneuverability in combat.

That said, I, in most games, use the mouse and keyboard for things like inventory transfers, etc. Clicking and moving items in the inventories always seems to be a pain with controller.

I've always used controller. IMO, controller is tops for combat but navigating menus and working out of chests is a pain. that's why I actually use KBM for things like that. I guess I have a hybrid style then. I just HATE using WASD to move. I also use the number row to switch weapons and use potions more quickly. iv'e been pondering getting a separate num pad for this that I can keep closer to my right hand.
going from board to controller might be tough, I dunno. you might think about just getting a board/cushion to put over your lap for KBM while you're on the couch. might be easier that using a game pad

Fortunately that's going to get better soon with the quick-depositing of stacks which doesn't even require opening chests. :3

that will be nice. to not open the chest was ctrl+E, I think. makes me wonder how they are gonna translate that to controller

I utilize hybrid style myself and it's the way to go! KB hotkeys for weapons/food/potions and movement with the twin sticks. IMHO, excellent support so far, only 'alpha' text input needs the KB or the Big Picture from Steam...I really like the LT 'snap to front', makes turning fun....

I find it very easy to plant crops using the controller in the left hand to move around and the mouse in the right hand to place the plants. Picking them up, though, can still be a dance, trying to aim at the right spot to pick them.

Be careful with your Steam controller settings. I tried get the controller working on No Man's Sky, which is having controller issues in the latest update, and hit some setting that seemed to be constantly swapping block and hit.

It's kind of annoying (and dangerous) if you're trying to parry an abomination and your character just takes a swing at it instead. Then you run away and try to hit it with the bow, and the bow keeps switching into block mode.

I don't like it for building (so I switch back and forth), but it's superior for everything else.

I mainly use a controller (a old 14 year old PS3 controller that registers as an XBox 360 controller with Steam). For me it's easier with combat and building but i use the keyboard when naming locations on the map and signs. :lightbringer:

Not a controller exactly, but I've been playing on the steam deck and it's been good (from a controls perspective at least). The game doesn't let you remap controller inputs, but steam has a pretty robust controller re-mapper and I wound up with a scheme I like.

the newest patch that dropped this morning (public test) is largely about controller improvements. lots of missing pieces added but I will likely still be doing hybrid because I'm just too used to it at this point

The one thing I'd like to see changed is the control for zooming. It's not great to have it bound to keys with LT modifier, since that's the same key for block. It's a pain to adjust camera while sailing because blocking will make the character stand up from their seat.

Controller is pretty good. You can do anything in game with the controller and a new controller scheme is being tested on the public server. My opinion the controller falls a bit flat in that you cant remap it and if you remap it in steam overlay you have to be always unplugging and replugging the usb. Overall though it plays pretty good once youve figured out all the ways to navigate the menu's.
