Safe to drop things in the boat?
So can you drop items in teh boat to transfer them?
or will they just despawn?

Items dropped while in a ship will sink right through the ship. Thus feeding animals while transporting them is impossible as is transferring items to another player.

There is a work around. You place a loading ramp for your boat. Put a cart on the ramp. Fill the cart. Axe the cart. All the items drop in crates. Push the crates down the ramp onto the boat.

The video is a year old so not sure if they patched this out and I have yet to try it so attempt at your own risk.

You could also use the cargo compartment... Doesn't work for pets but they aren't really meant to be ship-bound anyway?

Carts can be loaded onto longships now with minimal risk, same with animals at least in my experience. Your handling sucks, but it works.

The cartcrate option is safer, if a bit more tedious. It does still work as the boat's collision box interacts with the cargo crates, however you still run the risk of destroying the crates with collisions, and then all your non floatable goods become offerings to posideon. I would recommend just trying the cart method first.

ya, im trying not to do my old tried and tested cheeze way, were you log out and then log on to a world you store stuff, then log back into the game run back home, go back to said world and pick the stuff up.

i will prob be doing that for major loads of ore but dont wanna do it for just full backpacks of seeds and trophys lol.

Better to just drop a cart over the deck from a ramp, heaps of storage then.

God I know!
Transported two Loxen (one per trip) from the plains to my starter base, got attacked by a serpent each time. Both time the Lox ended up in the sea (got them home eventually but geez, wish you could put them in totally passive mode :) )

You could use a portal with portal all settings then though.

items are safe in the boat's storage chest.
Increase your player inventory space / stacks with a mod then you don't have to set anything down.

No point in feeding animals they don't die like in other games. When not fed they just don't breed.

The chest on the boat is rather small cannot hold much. It's the only safe place besides your body.

Along this subject but off topic kinda there might be water dynamics with the game that make items sink to ocean floor??? Idk because I installed a lot of mods early on think one of them makes sure ocean items always float so you can get to them.

There are boat mods but IMO they are confusing to construct. My increased inventory mod of choice says it applies to boats but the preconstructed boat of Odins Boats mod w/e does not seem effected.

So IMO ships are a later game so not much help for early game. Reworded, constructing a boat is a pain with all the lay down this workbench and that workbench and the modder's workbench then the workbench needs another workbench to work. So yeah just increase your player inventory and use boats as entertainment only like a Jack Sparrow wind in your hair sail for fun, don't worry about their carry loads it's bonkerish anyway.

From an immersive point of view; the only boat/ship that doesn't completely break immersion is the raft.

Nah I love the Karve and longship. I think they fit the setting perfectly.
My fav is to use the cart dragged onto ship method. On a long journey it is worth stopping next to an island to place a crafting table and repair both ship and cart, so you dont have the loot crates drop into ship, which can slide out in stormy weather, nor have the cart break your ship and lose it all that way too.
Would be better if they had meaningful storage slots on all boats. Thats exactly WHY they were used, after all... to haul many Vikings and much loot back from raids.
If you want to cheese more than that, might as well go with the teleport anything mods...
