You can also often just lure it to the shore if you're not too far from shore and in friendly enough water.

I can not remember the last time I used it for a serpent...... But I use it for trapping trolls, lox and wolves. Also it is fun to harpoon flying enemies (drakes and gjalls). You can still use your bow while it is harpooned, or drag them to an adjacent biome to fight other mobs. Dragging a gjall into mountians and watching 2 drakes take it down is a pleasant diversion.

Just remembered a time it saved me. I was alone on a multiplayer server and got stuck in one of the little water tunnels that go nowhere in a crypy. Deep enough to drain stamina if I moved, but I couldnt get over some root or something under the water. I logged out, called my brother so he could log in. He showed up with his harpoon, we turned on PVP, he harpooned me and pulled me out. I was very happy.

It's primary use is to transport domestic animals. Based on its damage rating, it was clearly never meant for anything else.
yeah, i meant for serpents... for the longest time i watched almost all available videos as the best guide for them and it appears to be a very time consuming task, spawning one itself is annoying enough already. i should try it on lox. One thing i have seen abyssal harpoon very godly in is pvp

I don't mean with the harpoon. I mean just sail toward shore while it follows the boat. Often it will swim into shallow waters where you can hop in and melee it.

I don't make the harpoon, but the abyssal razor is a very good mid-level knife. That and a fine wood bow were my only two weapons this playthrough until I got some silver to make a silver knife and Draugr Fang. It even works in the plains if you don't overextend.

Harpoon a gjall and drag it over a dverger outpost with an extractor you want.
by the way guys, i heard carrying dragon eggs in the ship increases the chance of them spawning.. ive spawned one with it but prob need more data to confirm.

ANYHOW speaking of sea combat, what weapon directly stabs straight down? it does take a few tries otherwise to kill the serpent.. ive also managed to ride one for like 3 seconds LOL

The secondary attack on the axe now hits straight down.
