And the minimap with the period comma buttons.
Just mho, but the minimap scale is too small as compared to the rest of the UI. Tell your husband I'm glad to hear at least one other person agrees with me.
It's a very different experience when you are forced to navigate without that crutch.
I also played with only using the map at the cartography table - so, no mini-map and only checking map when at home base.
More power to you if you do it because you find it 'fun' though. I'd be tempted to give it a go in a playthrough in the future myself if the game added buildable guidance aids that did not require building a work bench with a roof over it to construct. Like rock cairns and other types of 'trail markers'.
To make a trail on the ground I either use a how to make an actual trail, or use cooking stations as markers. You don't need to build a workbench to build them, and they are at least someone directional.
Navigating around land is not all that hard, except when the island you're on is very big. Coastline and mountain line tend to be good for navigation. If you get lost, generally finding one of those and following it around will get you back to where you want to be.
Navigation at sea is a very different matter, with fog and storms, and just the shear size of some oceans. It's very easy to get lost, unless you're careful to follow coastlines and/or known markers. That's where Yggdrasil comes in. That can be very useful in keeping you going the right direction, and I generally take a mental note (screenshot) of the tree above any base that I build. It can still be a challange to find, but getting the tree aligned the same ans the "mental note" is very helpful.
Mistlands is a whole additional level of challenge, though. There I place wisplights on the tops of rocks to use as a guide, but it can still be easy to get lost, sometimes for multiple days...

a track, because what we have in the game is not just a map, it is a navigation like in the modern world, I dont think our ancestors knew what is a GPS.
My point was that the current in-game provided map makes far more sense then no map at all. Humans have been making maps for over 8,000 years, with the first maps discovered pre-dating the technology level we have in Valheim by over 6,000 years.
By comparison, it's only been ~1,500 years or so to current times. i.e. even GPS quality technology is 'closer' to the Valheim technology than 'no map at all' is.
Regardless though, I do like the concept of playstyle he presented. i'd want more tools available in game to assist with navigation though than what are currently present. Some people suggested 'alternatives' in this thread, but those are hack-jobs and unsightly. I'd want the game itself to support that kind of play directly and with intention.
As to your point about using the map, and not the minimap, you're accomplishing nothing but exercising one of your fingers more doing that. Some players might think that's cool though, and more power to them.
