boats taking damage for no reason
see title. Figured this was a feature of taking small amounts of damage from rough seas in small boats, but it doesnt matter what boat. My boats all just randomly and periodically takes 10 or so damage now and then during a calm sea. I don't remember this before mistlands and it doesnt make the game better.

If it's exactly 10 damage it's what I call "Lag damage" because I have only ever seen it while playing on friends' servers. Never once seen it while playing solo.

it's rocks under water by the shore or leeches

Long boats take damage just like karves. With the Mistlands updates fish that are trying to jump can cause damage to the boat if they are under the boat when they try to jump.

I noticed damage occurring during the time I am sleeping in a bed... times passes by quickly and the level of the water raises and lowers (tides?) quickly as well, so the boat floats on the water and raises up with the water but suddenly the water drops down causing the boat to "fall" and gets damaged in the process.

There may be other reasons, but that is the one reason I have personally seen first-hand.

Related note- dont try going faster than speed 1 while carrying a lox unless the sea is glass-smooth or your boat will be taking 20 damage a pop and a lot more frequently. Speed 1 doesnt cause that issue.

If it is constant damage, it is from lag. Basically since the player is driving the boat, it can desync from the server. And when the position gets corrected, the engine thinks the boat hit the waves at high speed

I always thought it was just to simulate normal wear and tear.

This is still happening today Sept 18 2023... All was fine for hours, then randomly my ship starts taking 10 damage every 30 seconds or so. I left the server and came back. It fixed it for about 5 minutes, until it started happening again. Quite frustrating.

If you use a mod to remove stamina and swim across the ocean to another island, especially during storms and are wearing the fall-damage negating cape, you'll see it activating at almost every wave. Your boat is suffering fall damage. Boats should not suffer fall damage. They should only take damage from damage creating things like weapons and animal attacks.

I play singleplayer and I get this. Wiki says about damage from hitting waves too fast so I assumed it was that

That's the thing, there's valid and jank versions of this damage depending on if you're actually hitting things hard or suffering common physics glitches caused by lag. Given the bugs it's probably a mistake that hitting water can cause fall damage. I've seen that constant 10hp kick my boat's ass on glass smooth seas.

I've only really seen the the 10hp damage in calm weather when my fps was super low or in multiplayer. Normally in singleplayer I only get it in super stormy weather and even then still a lot less (maybe less than half) than when I steer a boat on someone elses server in stormy weather. I had a raft go from 100% to 0% in like less than 5 minutes of sailing on someones server. The shores were close when it sank.

Yeah that's the problem, it's a Heisenbug.

I think "Heisenbug" means that a bug seems to change when you try to observe it e.g. with debugging tools (like Heisenberg's uncertainty principle), not that it appears randomly or when computation gets worse. That would be more of a race condition.
