you fish with your fishing rod and the correct bait.
its a mess, but basically:
- buy or find a rod (buy from vendor)
- buy bait from vendor.
- eat stamina food and fish in meadows with vendor bait for a while to level your skill.
- catch something that makes black forest bait. repeat for each biome.
found this out when a level 4 GIANT pike jumped right into my ship during a storm. i was like WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥. that thing was like half a sea serpent in size.
got pufferfish and anglerfish this way. never fished so far with the rod^^ or cultivate a flat perch of land near ocean waves. fish get washed ashore sometimes there aswell and you can snag em. but boat > progression for fishing.
yeah some of the guys i am playing with is talking building a peer out into the ocean to catch fish like this.
Put everything back, continue on, see fish jumping, go get rod and bait, go back, no fish. Go back, put stuff away.
Find fish, get rod, cast rod, get a lvl1 perch. Rest of fish disappear never to be seen again.
Carry rod, find fish, paltry inventory full so can't pick up fish. Fish laughs and swims away.
Rinse, repeat, baited by game.
Fishing used to be fun. Not so much any more. I like the idea of a flat spot on ocean, would probably be more effective.
the fishing is really unique but its kinda weird for a game. considering our inventory space is so small and weight dependent. the fish do not stack. which is part of the system consider the higher the number on the fish the more raw fish you get. making it all very unique. notice i said unique i didn't say good.
with all the grinds for skill in this game fishing was one thing before the fishing update that didn't need a skill it was already tedious but now you have to raise your skill or forget catching large super fish.
today i saw a pike or perch i can't really tell them apart in the water as tall as my character. when i hooked him about 10 meters off shore it immediately drained my stamina and got away.
also fishing doesn't seem all that good at night for low skill areas like the meadows the fish just don't seem to care about the bait.
so yeah all in all its just a very weird change and made me very cranky because i have like 8 skill right now.
So in other words, another strange design choice that isn't respectful of a player's time.
Getting "fish" is easy but that is not the goal or shouldn't be of fishing.. if you are looking to get the best stam food in the game you specifically need angler fish which you can only get in mistlands.
The only way to get that is to catch the "special" biome fish from each corresponding biome to make the next level of bait to then catch the next fish..
If you find a single giant herring on the shore in the swamp you can bypass most of this and make the bait to catch groupers. There you will want to spend a little more time and you will want to catch around 10. 10 will afford you the ability to make 400 misty bait so 400 anglerfish.
Also, Fishing skill is pretty much meaningless. As long as you use 3 stam foods, fish on a boat and don't cast further than 10m away then you will not have an issue reeling in your catch.
