I mine copper a different (safer) way... I dig along the edge of the copper, then dig straight down as far as it lets me, then turn and dig right into the copper node at the bottom...

Digging into the copper like this will give an underground "cave" inside it, and enemies can't / won't be able to reach you, as long as you keep the top of it (at ground level) intact.... This also removes any dirt (wherever you dig). inside the copper node.
Once you have carefully dug out the inside of the copper node, you can actually set up things you need like a workbench (for tool repair), portal, coal kiln, smelter, cooking fire, bed etc...

This gives you a safe, easy place to process your copper ore, without having to transport it all back to some distant base, and once you process some of the copper you can craft a forge and actually make bronze and various tools/weapons right at the mining site.
Even if you don't want to make an outpost under the copper, It is still safer to mine it this way (from under it) because the enemies can't get you unless you open up large holes in the top, also this removes all the dirt so you can mine ALL the copper.

@OP it takes the same number of pick swings to get copper ore as it does to get tin ore. Just throw the rock away if you don't need it. The devs did it this way because that's the way it is in nature. There is a great deal of stone mixed in with copper, silver, (and gold) deposits but mineable tin is often found in large blobs with hardly any stone intrusions.
Devs kinda have a problem here. Dirt can't be partly at one level and partly above, so the only way to not clip terrain through the deposit is to set terrain below deposit level - however then all deposits will be fully exposed, no blending into terrain.
Probably the best thing devs could do it have nodes terraform terrain that clips through them on destruction, partly exposing surrounding nodes.
This is just my laymens take, I have zero connection to the devs, nor have I even read most of what they've said about valheim.
Hello,
I always wanted to try to dig under a skeleton or troll cave to see if it's possible to settle under, have you try it ?
I know Elder spawn shrine is a very large and solid roof for anything you put under, it also have a nice looking too !
later in the game you wanna make structures with black marble not stone. stone is now used for landshapeing mostly.
and getting stone lol. once you get to the mistlands there is GIANT STONE PILLARS everywhere. like the one in the plains sometimes. except bigger. and they are EVERYWHERE. you can mine 1000 stone in like 15 minutes there. there is no reason to ever safe stone in this game anymore.
You're right, everyone plays like you do!
I know it doesn't make sense compared to how it would be in real life, but that's the way the game engine handles terrain (dirt) elevations in this game.... It's not a "bug" and I don't think the devs can do anything to change it.
If you want the dirt gone, you have to dig it out, and the best way (shortest way and least amount of "work") is to dig it from underneath... as you dig into the node, it will remove all dirt above where you dig, in a couple hits, rather than digging downward and having to dig up to 16 hits to accomplish the same results.
