A finewood bow is preferred if you can get the materials, the trolls can help with that to if needed (and core wood comes from pines, already found in black forests with the trolls). Trolls are slow, so normally your little jog is just fine to kite them at just the right speed to let them catch up and try to attack to. You can sprint to make sure the attack misses but usually i just start drawing my bow (as another poster mentioned, fire is a damage over time effect, but if you time it for when they stop to attack its usually about when you need to reignite them to) while still walking away. It's usually enough to still be out of range of their attack (assuming no terrain or greydwarfs decide to get in the way). Mind the downward strike though, especially for the log troll, that one hurts (and is also the best one for breaking ore nodes that are usually super close to the ground where their swipe might not hit them).
Troll caves also usually have one inside them, though not 100% of the time. The perk of these is that the entrance counts as sheltered so you can place a fire and a workbench for rested and repairs. Plus they can not follow you out of the cave, so even though it's cramped inside you can just outright cheese them (or get all fancy and go with dodges or parries to move around them in such tiny spaces and kite them between the front and back of the cave). You can enter the cave with bow already drawn, or go in sneaking if you prefer (may not be the best approach if you dont have high sneak or already have some troll armor for that sneak bonus that you are just troll hunting to upgrade). Hit them (you can usually get 2-3 shots in before they come up to you back at the entrance, and if you are sneaky about it that first shot can be a staggering sneak crit for a decent chunk of their health to). When they get too close, simply walk back through the entrance (you dont actually have to interact with it to pass through). Even if you get hit once in the process you can just sit down outside, cook up some more meat, and recover for a minute (while the troll potentially de-aggroes so you can get another stealth crit no less). Keep going back in with your bow already drawn so you can at least let off a fire arrow at them before immediately leaving again if you find they are still camping the entrance (you may get hit, so always wait til full health to go back in). The fire damage will still tick on them while you are outside, though it only lasts a short time. Once the troll inside is cleared out, it wont respawn, but you can also place a fire inside to have a completely safe resting shelter during black forest travels as well.
Their only weak point is their head. They take normal damage when you shoot then in belly
Hes not wrong about the sneak/back stab damage though.
Thanks for the clarification. It's the weakness to pierce that allows you to stagger them with spears and arrows.
They aren't that bad, just scary. If they get into your base with a tree trunk and start swinging is when it gets bad.
To ensure one's block will result in a successful stagger, only raise the shield after the opponent begins their strike. I have never died to 1 or more trolls attacking me (regardless of stars) since I learned this skill back when I was wearing bronze. I now almost always use trolls when I come across one to harvest copper and wood.
The trench technic is really OK. Or raise a couple close pillars and run him crazy around those as he can't enter the maze.
Place a bed nearby first time facing one in melee so you can get back to action quick (after you die once, corpse run makes you unlikely to get killed second time). And after you learn its attacks you wont die anymore.
Trolls with wood log while scarier are actually easier to dodge as their attacks have longer windup. Watch out for barehand troll attack from above - dont bufer attacks (click too much). 1-2 hits and let him attack.
Also dont dodge "out of the way", you are kind of invincible at the start of a roll, so the timing is imporntat not actual position.
