I'm actually the total opposite, weapons and tools wearing off is just annoying as f. They should get rid of this mechanic.
Only torches or these kind of this with some combustible resource will not return the combustible ( wood , charcoal , graydwarf eyes , green stuff )
Lets keep the repair mechanic as it is.
imo the pickaxe wears too fast and the only thing I must carry at least 2 of.
If you were to add repair cost to that, with the no teleport with metal bars on... yeah, sounds like a winning strategy.
I loathe games with this upkeep feature, because it penalises people with less time/energy for playing.
If it's a feature you and others want, obviously i'd support it for you, but only if it was optional, because I 100% don't want it, and it would put me off playing completely.
Google search found a mod that appears to be what OP wants?

PS. I only play vanilla Valheim so far.
The idea I had in mind was a very common resource depending on the item. Wood, stone, flint, core wood, etc. Items that you will usually had loads of regardless. Which removes the grinding aspect everyone seems to think you would need to do just to repair.
A bit more immersion or, like i suggested, allowing it to 'buff' the item if you do repair it with materials instead of for free.
Right now, there really isn't even a point to have durability since all it does is require you to either carry a workbench with you or go back and just spam the repair button.
