I have before, but I prefer to fight off raids. Same reason I don't use trenches/soil walls. It's no fun if you are too safe.

Ive done this but its not my ideal best. I require ocean access, but prefer a fairly large island (a few hundred meters radius) and even better if it has a zone change on it.

My preference is on peninsulas. Invasion events can only come from one direction, creating a bottleneck for concentrated slaughter.
I keep a small gap that requires the player to jump over to enter (I wish there was a drawbridge mechanic). The enemy just gets confused trying and failing to reach me from the water.

I am very scared of anything out on the ocean so I prefer my base to not be in it. Also because I love building, I tend to always require a bit more wood and stone, that's why i like to go out to get some. On the sea, I either need to actually sail and be wind-dependent or only use portals

I have small bases everywhere they're convenient but my mains are usually on peninsulas near black forest and swamp zones.

My first base was on the top of a large hill and nothing could climb it but me so it was super safe.

I've also built islands to put bases on. I'll search the coastline with my boat and find a shallow spot or a spot with a tiny amount of biome sticking out of the water and start building it up until I can use it.

How did you put the lantern on a pole?

It shows up under furniture when you get the Black Forge, a lantern, copper bar and a chain.

I found a small island with part meadow, part plains and a touch of black forest. I build in the forest and farm and ranch on rest. Working great so far.

and I hate being annoyed by them constantly and wish you could simply turn them off.. if I want adventure and bad guys I'll go find them myself. lol.

I'm 100% an island boy.. so nice not to need walls and the view is gorgeous.

Mine was a peninsula that I cut away from the mainland.

I prefer security over having to deal with raids. So I tend to take an island or peninsula so I am not looking at moats and walls.

I do like the raids, however, I feel the game needs a balance tweak for fun here.

I would like to be able to find bits of iron earlier in the game. Not enough to where you could easily grind for gear, more so that it's possible to get the stone cutter earlier in the game. Add more incentives to build stone walls and less incentive to moat and earth wall things.

Well, i guess island means it is surrounded by water, so , technically, i got an
island base.

I would second that and perhaps make it to where the stone cutter requires bronze instead and only opens up foundation peices. A upgrader similar to other crafting benches would require a Iron ore upgrader and then that would unlock the other half of the stone building such as arches ect.

Here we have access to stone building work earlier but not all at once!
