I suppose the good news is that the Ancient Armor or Weapons that are mineable in Mistlands drop Scrap Iron that you can smelt to make the Blast Furnace. Iron Bars seem to be scavenge-able from some of the structures in Mistlands as well.
I did the Iron grind once with my original character, got so frustrated with having to mule the Iron around that I installed the Unrestricted Portals mod because I didn't want to do that kind of a mats grind ever again. I do hold myself to a solid rule. I have to defeat the Boss of a biom before I allow a metal from the biom though a portal, and even then they have to be ingots, not ore. So I mine and smelt on site, then portal to where needed. My head cannon is that smelting removes the last bit of a dead Forsaken's hold on the metals it once held dominion over. Be nice if the devs set the game up that way someday.
If you haul a smelter there, you get iron and copper easily, and for BM you can use said iron to make the furnace from portable materials. You don't have to drag any metal there, assuming there are plains not too far away or if you wait for a few night fuling to wander by (they spawn anywhere at night for someone who is in the mistlands).
Make the game play the way you want it to! :-)
The rampart pillars have ~30 iron bars each, so you can get up to 90 refined iron (and about 1k marble) in about 5 minutes.
The ancient weapons/armour are OK if you just need a bit (which is all you need for mistlands gear) but if your serious ramparts are where its at. Or a trip back to swamp.
Dwarf towers have ~90-120 copper if your wanting to build something big out of copper walls.
the cool thing is there are iron ore nodes and iron ores in the game allready (spawnable via cheats) but not used so far
(not talking about iron scraps)

its nice that you can find scraps of previous metals in the mistlands but even with the whisps i still find it horrible to build in there and i think its time for some qol updates, like upgradeable portals or so
My experience also. On my map there's a village next to Mistlands. I left it alone. I like watching the Fulings and Seekers get into a brawl. I have a thing about giant cockroaches so I give the Fulings a hand now and then...
Looks like the Dverger Mages can kick Fuling butt without breaking a sweat. Love seeing that.
I suspect they tried to slow down the pace with Mistlands since it'll be 6-12 months before we get another update so they wanted to make it "last". When viewed from the perspective of playing it for that length of time, taking 30 minutes to explore 50m in front of you starts to seem reasonable.
I think the intended approach initially was for players to use those blue mist lamps to clear the way, which i did for a time building paths with them.
Unfortunately Gjalls etc are programmed to attack those, which utterly defeats the purpose of building them as i left a breadcrumb trail right to my base.
It’s inconvenient, sure, but once you do it you never have to do it again, which is far better than having to scavenge and sail iron back to your main base each time you run out of it.
